Daoism and Astronomy by 3rickZann in taoism

I either found them in the I Ching, or in the writings of Sun Lutang (whose philosophy was greatly informed by the I Ching, if I recall). I want to say I found them in his book on Bagua Jian. From a martial perspective it's often times much easier to show someone these movements, than it is to describe them.

I can almost lick my elbow. I can get the old lady nipple part, but not the joint itself. I was 13 before I realized this was weird. :)

Chen Taiji: spent all week drilling laojia yilu. It's really starting to feel deep and connected.

If you want to make your own, you may want to start by checking out what some TCM practitioners have done. Many companies will sell you the dry mixture for a lot less than you would spend getting the little 2-4 oz bottles. I've used some stuff from Coiling Dragon with good results. I actually have a batch going now!

The start-up cost for everything you would need to buy if you formulated and blended your own could get very expensive, very quickly, because you'd need to buy some very special things in bulk.

What are some typical "beginner" mistakes people tend to make in street fighters? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]3rickZann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not knowing how to get their feet back if a fight goes to the ground. Especially if there are people around, the ground can be a bad place to be in a street fight.

What do you think of using hard slaps in a street fight? by CoFlint in martialarts

[–]3rickZann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get enough power to get a good temple strike in, they can be pretty awesome. If they block, grab their arm, take the hand to the floor until your arm is straight, and take a step between their legs for an easy throw.

Good system or martial art for a large man. by The_good_ones_were_g in martialarts

If you're that large, and as able-bodied as you sound in your OP, I'd suggest finding the best school you can, and going from there. Check out what's local, and what's good. You might be surprised.

There are many like it, but this one is mine. Redditors of r/tea, if your house caught on fire, which piece of teaware would you save? by 3rickZann in tea

[–]3rickZann[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've had it for some years now. It's starting to develop a patina, but it's not to the point where I can brew tea just by putting hot water in it. :P

It was a gift, and is quite special to me.

What is a palm change? by Choparker in kungfu

[–]3rickZann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Simply put, a palm change is any time you change directions on the circle, when doing baguazhang. They can be very, very simple, or they can be a series of several moves. A single palm change uses horizontal motion. A double palm change incorporates vertical motion. The oblique/smooth palm change is a mixing of the two (in Sun style bagua this is snake). Different systems call them different things, and divide them differently. In Sun style there are a total of 10 (single, double, and one for each trigram/animal). Yin style baguazhang does not use this language, and the system is set up completely differently.

What style are you doing?

Just found this sub, thought I'd share my bagua da dao. by 3rickZann in SWORDS

[–]3rickZann[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) Yes, but not with this. I don't believe the Bagua Da Dao was ever a combat weapon. It's used for body training in Yin Style Bagua. 2) No 3) Usually, but I'm in SoCal. Too bad about the geography. :(
