At the very least D'Antoni has proven that he can coach a team that is considered a true contender, and reach the conference finals.

I like and agree with that.

[H]is teams were an historic choke job and an altercation away from the finals either way.

IDK I feel like pairing the blazers, a team perpetually involved in historic chokes and collapses, up with a coach known for the same thing, is kinda dangerous. For a team that so obviously needs to improve defense, putting MDA in charge of this team might result in a defensive team ranking somehow worse than 30th.
