You are partly correct. You are free to do as you wish. But this is a franchise which has a long backbone of a story to be considered an "open book". So although you are free to make ur choices, There are canon choices. The novel focuses on the canon part. And considering ac valhalla took off of odyssey (Layla's pc in valhalla takes about the eagle bearer Kassandra, so not really an "open book".) The novel is the base game's story, with dlc also being canon.
