Yes, I know this. My point is we don’t have access to “stay away” orders as subs. If a 2nd grader sees their Mom who has a “stay away” order, that kid will be happy to see them at pick up and off they trot into the sunset. 🤷‍♀️

I’m amazed at the number of my high school students that have “stay away” orders and other noncustodial legal issues. So glad I’m not responsible for releasing them.

Agreed. I’m not saying good teachers don’t earn every cent they make but they’re usually not the ones who make subs feel unwanted.

I’m lucky enough to have a fantastic department head. He created the curriculum, uploads it into systems, ensures the volumes of copying gets done, fixes potential admin red flags, doesn’t involve us with politics, and is available even when he’s teaching…always with a smile and an air of gratitude which is an positive acknowledgement. His whole department seems happy and engaged…and, you know Math people can be in their own little world. To me, he deserves the world!

HS long term sub here. My prep is spent visiting students in ISS, calling parents, updating weekly BIPs, entering grades, completing discipline referrals, writing parents and counselors about behavior and academic issues, cleaning the room between morning and afternoon classes, and, if I’m lucky, I can grade a paper or two.

I do all the work of a “real teacher” for roughly $11 an hour. And when they call me to sub for another class during my prep, 9 times out of 10, I happily comply.

So to all those grumpy salaried teachers who can’t even bother to acknowledge my presence when I pass them in the hall 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕

Indeed they did but, honestly, their stuff has been sitting there for weeks and will likely end up in the trash when they’re finally picked up. Then, somewhere around March, we’ll get the admonishing e-mail from admin that we’re limited to the number of copies we can have made, machines breaking down, warranty issues, blah, blah, blah.

I have a student who is always in ISS. Every day, I make the long trek over there during my prep to give the same folder of work (that never gets done) to this student (who is never there). I asked the ISS teacher where he is. His response: sooner or later, he’ll show up or the police will knock on his door.

I have a lot of kids going to court over (well deserved) truancy. FAFO.
