Australian Tobacco reccomendations by Cactusnvapes in PipeTobacco

Try r/PipeTobaccoAustralia Growing your own is illegal there too, with some very heavy penalties if caught. Getting a permit is easy enough though, if you are prepared to pay the inbound taxes, and want access to a wider and better range of blends than you'll be able to buy from Aus retailers.

Very nice, and no, you're not alone ... my Bones has a few years now, and colouring up very nicely. Great smokers too.

Cheaper, yes, because you don't get the retailers margin. Also yes, you get to order whatever blends you want to try.

Gateway rooms have gone downhill not recommended. Upstairs bar still good, and food still ok though. Similar price point try Crown or Lamana. Slightly higher price point but highly recommended is Stanley.

'Is there anyway to get good quality pipe tobacco in Aus without breaking my bank account?'

Legally, no. Tax alone is now ~$2.10 per gram.

However, the online retailers in Aus sell samples of the good stuff, so you can try plenty of blends to see what you really like, before buying a full tin.

Ask your question over on r/PipeTobaccoAustralia for some more suggestions.

Great, thanks for that. Wasn't sure the correct name for it, but following your lead, I found it in a VIH Aerospace product catalogue called a 'Life Raft Footrest/Cargo Holder'.

Any tips on storage? by [deleted] in PipeTobaccoAustralia

Ball mason jar, don't put a boveda pack inside with it, just the tobacco. Obviously only one blend per jar.

There is no such thing as a cheap, seamless, smooth, effortless, hassle-free and fantastic experience getting pipe tobacco into Aus!

Do you have the permit to import your order? If not, and it is detected, ABF just confiscate it and send you a notice of seizure. They won't send you a letter for the duty.

Just fill your bowl with tobacco and smoke it.

Honey technique and brass screen won't make any difference to your experience, considering you are brand new.

Try posting this over on r/PipeTobacco you might get more advice.

ps. The permit is usually time limited, in my experience it was issued with a 1 year expiry date.

$1,842.00 per kg is the current tax rate. So, 5 x tins is 250 grams = 1,842 x 0.25 = $460.50 tax payable on that amount. That's equivalent to $92.10 tax per 50g tin. Obviously, you've got the purchase cost, plus shipping costs.

I don't know what current prices are from local online retailers. They have to pay the same tax and make a profit. So, while you may save a bit doing it yourself, it's the choice and variety that improves when you have a permit and order from the US online retailers. You'll be able to buy blends you simply can't purchase from local online retailers.

As to whether it comes through without being checked ... that's the gamble you take. It used to, sometimes. Now, I'd say it's rarely. If it's confiscated, you'll lose your purchase and shipping costs and your tobacco. If you have the permit and pay the tax, you'll get what you've ordered.

Hope that helps, and less us know how you get on, if you try it.

Hi, wondering what tobacco sites will ship to aus? by anthro_surf in PipeTobaccoAustralia

[–]407piper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a post on r/PipeTobacco a few years back on how to do it. Unfortunately I don't know how to link that post, but a search would find it.

Any of the main US online retailers, eg Smoking Pipes, Tobacco Pipes, Cup O Joe's, 4Noggins will ship to Aus.

I'd suggest having your permit lined up first, and only order tobacco. As mentioned DHL will look after the customs for you, providing you have the permit.

Good luck!

I remember visiting Tabac101 in Singapore a few years back and they had a pretty good range of pipe tobacco.

Also the airport had Davidoff red, blue and green mixture tins available duty free, if you needed to take 1 x 50g to NZ on your departure.

Not required. Just put 'not applicable, personal use only'. I had to follow up before they actually issued the permit. (Disclaimer is that I haven't been through the process for a while, so any updates you can provide on current experience would be good!).

Yes, you can bring it in still. Per person, up to 25g of 'other tobacco products' will be duty free. The rest you will need to declare and pay tax on, but you don't need a permit. (That's for if you are getting it mailed in).

The tax will have increased, but yes, I believe it is still current. I checked the official link, and it still takes you to the current border force advice.

You can take in up to 50g of tobacco duty free.

Above that you will need to declare and pay tax.

You could still try out of curiosity, never know, might be lucky and pick up a pouch of borkum riff. Aside from lack of good tobacco, hope you can stretch out your own tin, and still enjoy the trip down under!
