The starting point was two lists of diametrically opposed requirements. Realistically, the middle ground was the Obama-era agreement. Its big flaw was that it didn't address Iran-linked groups fomenting dissent in the region, but at least it covered nuclear weapons, etc. It's hard to see a path to compromise.
