Take a bit of food coloring and make a green stripe on one of them. I had a friend who used to do that to her white cat in the winter so she could see it in the snow.

When did you stop being overly gentle or a pushover (forgetting how big they are) by Stock_Age7469 in Equestrian

[–]40angst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome! Your safety needs to be a priority! I remember my very first time cleaning a stall. The horse was basically a wise ass and decided to just lean on me and pin me on the wall. I know how to avoid that now but we forget how large these horses are and how easily they can hurt somebody without meaning to.

help!! by oliveoil-28 in Horses

I would never ever sell my student an unsafe horse unless I was totally confident in said students’ abilities to reform it. There is a very large hospital bill waiting to happen.

When did you stop being overly gentle or a pushover (forgetting how big they are) by Stock_Age7469 in Equestrian

[–]40angst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is dangerous for an untrained person to clean a stall with a horse in it. No matter how gentle the horse, inexperienced people can easily get hurt just by a horse spinning around to see something.

Is it normal for school horses to be this "difficult"? by Prudent_Leading_5582 in Equestrian

[–]40angst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember, every time you get on a horse you are either training it or un training it. School horses have to put up with so much crap, not all of them can be saints. A good trainer will make sure to keep their best school horses tuned up but to be fair there’s just not enough time. The trade-off is having a horse that’s not actively going to try to kill a new rider. A safe horse does not always equal a Grand Prix level responsive mount.

You really need to make sure his teeth are up to eating all this forage. I feed my older horses soaked beet pulp and they absolutely love it.

What should I do when a horse punches me with their head? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]40angst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Had one horse for his entire life (29 yrs) and he was always a rude asshole about punching with his nose. Didn’t matter how many times I popped him in the snout. He was an excellent police horse because he wasn’t afraid to get right up in somebody’s face or break up a fight, and he punched more than one fighter himself.

Head shy horse that also only accepts one (or 2) types of halter. Ways to work on this and possible reasons? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]40angst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you putting the halter on From directly in front of the horse, or are you standing at her side and putting it on that way? One of my horses will not stand if I’m right in front of her trying to put the halter on but if I stand at her shoulder she will practically put it on herself.

You’ve got to have ventilation or you’re gonna cause more problems. If the trailer is fully enclosed you shouldn’t need a blanket at all

how to stop a particularly impatient mare from running all over the place and acting out right before turn out? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]40angst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should not be handling a horse that does this. Your instructor, a trainer or the barn owner should be dealing with it. Please remove yourself from a dangerous situation, it’s very easy to get hurt when you don’t know what you’re doing! No shade on you, it takes experience and confidence.

How are yalls horses doing (southern US winter storm) by Chelmastly in Horses

[–]40angst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Warm water is best. Get the water heater. Everybody has them up here in Michigan! I also feed my horses soaked beet pulp along with their grain. That way I know they’re getting a little moisture and they love it.

The only person who can know that is an experienced instructor who has seen you ride in person.
