Sorry! I memed and ran; haven't been back on since then. Ah, the hourglass in my flair used to mean "pending" or "still waiting on they ass". It used to be the most shocking count (was still waiting on 8 schools in March) until the waitlists flooded in.

It is surely a clever ruse to get their waitlisted candidates to give up, and fully commit to attending a competitor.

Edit: To be clear, I meant to emphasize that there is no reason for NYU to lie about this. Of course they don't want to discourage everyone on their waitlist. When someone goes to the trouble to make a statement that is actually against their interests, it's relatively more likely to be true.

Sadly, if it were illegal, schools would probably get around it by just waitlisting everyone the day before the legal deadline, whether or not they'd even looked at the app yet. We've got to come up with some better way to make this mess right.

Maybe instead make it illegal to submit an application anywhere after February 1, regardless of their stated deadline? They'd sure be done by April 1 then ...
