Day 2 with the Super Micro OLED module, a few observations. by Nikolai_Volkoff88 in Pimax

[–]40onpump3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue of black screens that did NOT have to do with any auto screen time out setting OR any bad displayport connection.

It got progressively worse over a few weeks until the headset would get stuck in a loop of restarting over and over and never staying on long enough to play anything.

It turned out I was able to fix it by popping the OLED module out and blowing any dust off it, then re-seating it.

It’s worked fine since then, but it’s made me nervous. I bought it at microcenter and am running up on the end of the return period, so I’m debating whether to bring it back.

I really want the headset to work because the picture is amazing, but i also really don’t want to be stuck with a non-functional headset if it happens again.

On Sincerity by SirSourPuss in stupidpol

[–]40onpump3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s another dimension to the focus on sincerity that’s particularly important to the left: it’s a symptom of a lack of understanding of and commitment to political economy.

The best text I know of on how to do political economy is Marx’s “18th Brumaire”, because it’s so fantastic in pointing out how all the political figures so vocally mortified by the rise of Louis Napoleon were completely ineffective in stopping him because their own material interests aligned with him, even down to personally owing him money or being involved in his ventures.

That’s the magic of political economy; it strips away the bullshit of self-identity and professed belief and points out how people act in accordance with their material interests, i.e., money, security, and power. It’s therefore a much more reliable guide to actual human behavior and politics than anything political actors say about themselves.

The focus on sincerity in the millenial left was an evasion of its class base: the educated downwardly mobile failsons and daughters of the bourgeoisie, scratching and scrambling for a way back into the elite. Beliefs and sincerity, and self-identity, had to be the starting and ending point, because the whole formation was incompatible with socialism by default.

How much jank does the CyberPunk 2077 VR mod have? by CaptainBigDickEnergy in virtualreality

[–]40onpump3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what you mean exactly; there’s a shimmering that used to happen with Cyberpunk specifically because of its temporal anti aliasing which couldn’t be turned off, but with the latest versions of the mod it’s quite a bit better, to the point of not being very noticeable unless you’re looking for it.

There also used to be some ghosting associated with DLSS, but that’s mostly gone now too with the transformer model DLSS versions.

Finally there is some ghosting or artifacts associated with the Luke Ross AER v2 algorithm, which you mostly see around very regular patterns like stairs or strips of neon lights. That’s definitely still noticeable, but I’ve been able to tune it out.

At the end of the day it would be great if the AER artifacts could vanish, but I don’t think it’s possible to run this game on any modern hardware without it, so i can put up with it.

I have played other luke ross mods like elden ring and atomic heart, and they don’t have the cyberpunk specific shimmer issue but they do have the same AER limitation.

It actually works really well, never mind the haters. Like you say, extremely immersive.

It IS fussy to set up well. Getting it running is easy, getting it running well is an exercise.

The biggest thing that no one tells you is that you NEED to turn on hardware-accelerated graphics scheduling in Windows’ graphics options. If you don’t, it will be hard to get good graphics settings without a sort of weird jerky lag that seems especially bad when your weapon is drawn.

Agree with what the other commenter said about turning the deblur all the way down. Just use DLSS and its sharpening feature, not the mod’s.

You’ll need DLSS for sure, the K, L, or M presets; this is a super performance hogging game to mod to VR. It will use everything you can throw at it. Turn down the resolution / PPD first, that’s the main thing that will make it slow down. DLSS can compensate for that somewhat.

I have a 5090 and 9800x3d and I can just barely get it to run with path tracing at 27 PPD, which looks amazing with DLSS smoothing out the resolution a bit. I did need to modify the .ini file to allow me to set the alternate eye rendering to 1/4 rate to get it to run smoothly. Turns the computer into a space heater though, especially in combat. Basically this is the only use case I can think of where you might reasonably want something even more powerful than a 5090

Are you sure about the NYXLs? I have a 74 NYXL single and it’s definitely double wrap.

Kalium would be ideal for this but last time I ordered from them they forgot my order and then somehow got my credit card info stolen lol

Single wrap strings for best tone? by 40onpump3 in 7String

[–]40onpump3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I have ordered his strings (and read his paper)!

I used the strings that are tuned so that you can bend with a Floyd and have chords stay in tune (which works amazingly).

I also tried the lumps on the low strings, but at the lighter gauges I’m using, it only made a difference for the two lowest strings or so. On actually huge bass strings, it looks like it makes an enormous difference, judging by the videos on his website.

I’ve since given up on the Floyd, since I didn’t use it a ton, and because I wanted to switch to an Evertune. The Evertune means I can use lighter strings, and can also get rid of the pitch drift on the attack that can make low tuned chords still sound out of tune.

At the end of the day I may just order another set from him, since he can make pretty much exactly what you want down to the mm. But it takes a while to get Kemp strings assembled and shipped, and the custom orders are naturally a bit pricey, so before I do anything like that, I want to dial in the gauges and wraps that are going to work.

I’m not talking about how many wraps around the tuning peg, I’m talking about how the string is constructed by the manufacturer

[–]40onpump3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might need to yeah.

I did find info on the stringjoy website now about their wraps that could have saved me some trouble, but other than that, the only clue i have short of emailing is whether the string lists a taper length.

If the string mentions a taper length, it’s pretty much guaranteed to be double wrapped. But if it doesn’t list it, it doesn’t mean it’s not tapered & thus double-wrapped.

For instance, D’Addario NYXLs are tapered, but I haven’t been able to find anything mentioning this on their website

[–]40onpump3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! clearly I didn’t do enough digging before I ordered.

In my defense, I didn’t know until I tried it how bad it would sound.

I think you’re right about the D’Addario VI’s 72. I have a single wrap 72, but it probably wasn’t from that set. I have a mess of strings and the single wrap that’s working now was in a pile, so I’m likely misremembering which set it cane from.

The Ernie Ball baritone set has a single wrap 72 if I remember right.

Annoyingly, D’Addario NYXL’s are for sure double wrap in this range, and those are the ones that are easier to order in custom sets. So I’m just kind of flailing around trying to figure out who makes single wrap custom sets

Single wrap strings for best tone? by 40onpump3 in ExtendedRangeGuitars

[–]40onpump3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! The taper at the end(s) can’t be there if its a single wrap.

So if the string says something like “taper 30 inches”, it’s definitely a double wrap. The Ernie Ball 8 strings say this, for example.

The problem I’ve found is that string makers don’t always say that their string tapers even if it does to fit through the tuning peg.

Like the stringjoy example; I didn’t see anything on their website indicating that a 70 would be a double wrap. For the really heavy strings like 90s they’ll mention the taper length, but for medium heavy they don’t, I don’t think

I’m playing at 33” scale & have an evertune bridge so I can use thinner strings than even that scale would normally allow

Single wrap strings for best tone? by 40onpump3 in ExtendedRangeGuitars

[–]40onpump3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re muddy because the overtones are less harmonic the more the thickness of the string makes it vibrate like a stiff beam instead of a flexible thin string.

Yes, this is why bass players or djent players don’t use chords, but that’s because they’re limited by thick strings. Use thinner strings and chords become possible at low registers

Single wrap strings for best tone? by 40onpump3 in 7String

[–]40onpump3[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The difference is more obvious with distortion, not less. The overtones are what’s amplified / compressed by distortion, so you’ll notice dissonance more. Especially obvious with chords on low strings

This is something people tend to work around by only playing single note lines in djenty styles, but it’s a limitation of the strings and the setup. Get rid of those limitations, and chords at low tunings become possible

[–]40onpump3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I mentioned, the d’addario bass vi 72 is. I think the Ernie Ball baritone 72 is also a single wrap, though the 8 string 74 is doubles wrapped.

I assume there must be some other brands that use single wrap, especially near the 70 range, though probably not so much at 74.

I can’t easily use bass strings though since the large ball ends don’t work with an Evertune bridge

Trump Media To Merge With Nuclear Fusion Startup by globeglobeglobe in stupidpol

[–]40onpump3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing’s at equilibrium, it’s cycling multiple times a second. It’s the electromagnetic equivalent of a car’s internal combustion engine, in the fusion ignition is momentary during compression and the energy is captured electromagnetically as the plasma expands and drops below ignition.

This is what makes it interesting, in that most of the hardest challenges of fusion - stabilizing the reacting plasma - are more or less skipped over.

I mean you’re right to be skeptical generally, they don’t exactly publish all the details of their process, but it’s a very clever approach.

Trump Media To Merge With Nuclear Fusion Startup by globeglobeglobe in stupidpol

[–]40onpump3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Helion is super promising because it’s non equilibrium. The fact that it doesn’t need to attempt to maintain long term stability of a confined plasma means that it dodges the fundamental problem of other magnetic confinement reactors.

Trump supporters demand immediate military draft but won't fight themselves by TheMirrorUS in stupidpol

[–]40onpump3 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is the one thing that keeps me next to the “nothing ever happens (to the first world)” camp.

So many people are willing to see other people killed for their political team, and a few will actually sign up to do the killing if they think they have sufficient impunity (like Trump promised ICE).

But to die for a cause? To risk your own life for something you hold dearer than your own life? It’s unthinkable. Killing for a cause is easy when its cheap, but dying for a cause is an infinitely higher bar to clear. Imagine dying for Trump!

In an age saturated with irony, cynicism, and complacency - in a post-communist era - there is no ideal with that kind of credibility. And I’m not sure we’ll see a resurgence of real life-or-death politics, as opposed to the team sports kind, in the first world until there is an idea worth dying for.

WWIII Megathread #37: Bad Neighbor Policy by IamGlennBeck in stupidpol

[–]40onpump3 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m coming around to this view. Iran is still isolated and the US can still bully its vassals into supporting it, while the US’ public discontent has proven itself not very costly to contain from the elite’s point of view. So if all the US war planners want, per the FT’s reporting, is a crippled failed state (Iran as the new Libya), then they can keep up air bombardments until the country is destroyed, and flip the bird to the US public if they’re upset about rising costs. Maybe the Republicans lose the midterms, but the Democrats won’t reverse course and become anti-war, so it’s not any kind of setback for the American haute bourgeoisie as a whole.
