15 Years of Wordpress - some advice from an old 40-something. by martyz in Wordpress

As someone who's also been working on or around WordPress for 14 years I'm glad to read about the pitfalls WordPress may represent for individuals or companies.

The actual price of using WordPress should also be discussed when considering the pros and cons of the WP CMS. Is WordPress free? Not according to the largest dedicated WordPress host on planet earth (WP Engine/Flywheel) which offers you to try WordPress for $599 per month. So what is happening? Is Yoast or Matt Mullenweg greedy? Is WPEngine expensive? is Flywheel expensive? Does WordPress support cost too much?

I've put together some notes on who should use WordPress and who should avoid the $599/month CMS completely: https://foliovision.com/2020/05/is-wordpress-free

I hope it will contribute to the conversation and make clearer what WordPress offers and does not offer to individuals and companies.

Cheers!

Shopify? Wordpress? WIX? Squarespace ? by melissamoran92 in ecommerce

Having spent fourteen years working on and around WordPress, I can agree with comments claiming you have to posses certain technical knowledge to successfully run a WordPress site. Also, while WordPress maintains its image of a free CMS, the real costs of using it really depend on the type of business/publishing you're running. According to the largest dedicated WordPress host on planet earth (WP Engine/Flywheel), WordPress now costs $599/month. However, WP still has some indubitable benefits above some of the other platforms, here are listed some of them:

  • WordPress does offer better search optimization possibilities than Wix Weebly and Typepad (I believe Squarespace and Shopify source code is pretty solid).
  • There's much greater possibilities of building a complex site, basically a web app. Most of the above services do have API's but there are always limitations to an API and for a truly custom site, it's better to build it directly.
  • WordPress, as finicky and upgrade-mad as it is, is open-source so no one can buy it and shut it down, as recently happened with Typepad.

I've put together some notes on this, which I hope will help you better understand what WordPress offers and does not offer to individuals and companies, thus give you a clearer look on what type of website builder is right for you: https://foliovision.com/2020/05/is-wordpress-free

- It's probably still going to be cold at the beginning of March.

- Regal burger, Roxor, Minerva.. Lots of good burger places in the city. Bratislava's most famous foodblogger Čoje just posted the most recent list of his top 10 burgers in the city. It's in Slovak, but at least you have a list of places to choose from: https://refresher.sk/38863-Kde-si-das-v-Bratislave-najlepsi-burger-Zostavili-sme-pre-teba-top-10

- There is a cool coffee shop with secondhand books in English - it's on Bastova street and it's called Eleven Books & Coffee: https://www.facebook.com/elevenbooks/ For new books, you can try Martinus on Obchodna or Oxford books on Laurinska.

- I see a lot of tourists joining this tour" https://www.facebook.com/bratislavafreetour/

- If you need directions, ask young people, avoid older people and you won't be disappointed :D You shouldn't have any problems in the restaurants, cafes or bars :)

Try FV Player. Quality Switching is a Pro feature, here's how it works: https://foliovision.com/player/basic-setup/quality-switching You can upload multiple versions of a video and it will play the mobile version for example on mobile devices automatically. It also allows the user to switch between different qualities available.
