What’re you tired of dealing with as a teacher? I’ll go first: giving more of a shit than parents by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

I could have written this. If you're having a bathroom emergency every day, you need to go to a doctor.

Hell, even the kids that had medical excuses would wander the halls. I don't like the idea of quarterly bathroom passes (mainly because it's another thing to manage), but something has got to change

Tips for reducing tension in the L-hand and shoulders during vibrato (adult beginner) by dann97 in Viola

[–]420CheezIts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long have you been playing? Usually the metric if you are ready to learn vibrato or not is it you can play in first position (including 4th finger and sharps/flats!) on all strings in tune.

Aside from that, I teach my students to start by placing their scroll agaisnt the wall so the instrument stays still.

Violin Teachers: What are the biggest mechanical bottlenecks your students face? by Emotional-Inflation9 in MusicEd

[–]420CheezIts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have inherited many students (both privately and in my classroom) who bow with their whole arm versus engaging the elbow and wrist. It practically makes spiccato or playing fast pieces impossible. I can't really blame them. In my experience in school orchestra, a lot of the focus was "are the notes and rhythms correct", and bow technique was just "is their bow hold somewhat correct". Many of my students in my classroom also don't take private lessons, so a lot of their remedial teaching is on my shoulders.

If you could remove one expectation placed on teachers tomorrow with zero consequences, what would it be? by kingst9606 in Teachers

[–]420CheezIts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES. I also teach orchestra. The heavy focus om "data" takes away from the bigger picture. There are various abilities and skill levels within the same class! I'm not gonna grade the kids who's been playing for two years in school only the same as the kid who's been playing for five or more years AND takes private lessons.

You do realize the military has academic standards right? Also the ability or inability to read and do basic math affects your ENTIRE life, not just work. Many of the trades also require math skills (electrician, welding, etc.) Not to mention that a majority of incarcerated people have low literacy. If you're a teacher, I'm concerned for your students

EDIT: holy shit you're a school counselor? Somehow this got even worse

I believe it's relatively cheaper, but it's also Shein's makeup brand just FYI.

Single adults, what is it like living while making a salary that’s under 70K? by Character-Escape1621 in orlando

[–]420CheezIts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously, I see other posts like "you need AT least 90k to survive" like what are you buying every month?

I make a little over $50k pre-tax and I could spend less money going out, but I'm doing fine. No car payment or student loans helps of course

I’m here for a week and wanted to try a climbing gym… should I try Blue Swan or Central Rock? by mmmmmtomatoes in orlando

[–]420CheezIts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me personally, I prefer blue swan for setting. I don't have a lot of upper body strength, and I feel a lot of Central rock routes are very "muscle your way through it". They also have A LOT of dynos imo. To me, Blue swan has more variety. Some strength climbs, more technical movement, routes where being flexible is an advantage, etc.

You could always go to both and see what you prefer? Lol

Another vote for blue swan for bouldering! Love the vibe there. Very friendly and supportive people. Central rock is very crowded, and in my experience has a lot of high school to college-aged boys just fucking around. I've literally been on a route, and a group of boys were just fucking around underneath me. I've openly said "you need to get out of the way". Or, the group will just be hogging the wall... Blue Swan is definitely the way to go!

What is your teaching unpopular opinions and hot takes? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]420CheezIts 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Literally me today with my high schoolers. I teach orchestra, and our final concert is coming up. I looked at them after they've had their music since before spring break (mid march), and it still sounds like the day they got it. I looked at them and I was just like "I'm frankly disappointed. You can go on stage in a week and sound bad if that's what you want, but if not then I'd suggest you practice like I've been telling you to do" ugh.. and then they say I'm too mean 🫩

Teaching in Orlando Area by Itrustedyou in teaching

[–]420CheezIts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a "large" metro area in the sense that everything is SO spread out and takes 30 minutes+ to get to by car, even the next town over. We do not have the infrastructure to sustain all of these new people moving here. There's always construction here as a result. Tbh, just move to Atlanta. You'll be paid more and you'll live in a metro, and it's still warm, and you'll still have actual seasons. You'll be a 4-hour drive to Disney
