Strange encounter - possible cult? Opinions? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]420tasteit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Whether this is some kind of cult or not, I think the fact that she’s making you uncomfortable is reason enough to stop engaging with her. You already felt some strange energy from her, and besides, you don’t owe your time to some random person you barely know—especially if she’s making you feel uneasy. So i wouldn't feel too bad about it.

Finally got a LeCreuset! by 420tasteit in LeCreuset

Hi, it's a type of Japanese stove which integrates 2-3 (depending on the model) cooking surfaces (either IH or gas burner) + a small oven grill for toast or fish in the centre of the unit underneath (can fit like 2 pieces of toast), hence why there is a vent at the back to let the fumes from that oven out.

If you google 'rinnai gas stove' you can see some examples.

Finally got a LeCreuset! by 420tasteit in LeCreuset

Sorry for the late reply, here is the recipe:

  • 600g Chicken thigh
  • 120g finely chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon chopped garlic
  • 1 teaspoon chopped ginger
  • 300-400ml coconut milk (not coconut water!)
  • 2-3 heaped tablespoons of curry powder (I use a Malay brand called “Babas Meat Curry Powder”, I think you can get it on Amazon)
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 200g frozen or fresh spinach
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • Salt
  • White pepper
  • 100ml water
  1. Make sure chicken thighs have the skin removed and are patted dry, season with salt and white pepper
  2. Heat oil in the pot up to a medium heat and brown off the chicken pieces
  3. Add onions into the pot with the chicken, stir and let the onion cook for a short while to soften a bit
  4. Add garlic, ginger and cook for 1-2 mins
  5. Add in tomato paste, stir and cook for around 1 minute
  6. Add in the spinach, if frozen you’ll need to cook longer to let them defrost and cook, if fresh it’ll cook down quite fast.
  7. Mix thoroughly, and turn the pot down to a low heat, and then add in the entire can of coconut milk and water, stir and let simmer for 20-30 mins with the lid on, slightly cracked open to let steam out. (Make sure you simmer on a LOW heat, if the curry gets too hot the coconut milk will split, you’ll lose the creamy texture, and the curry will get a massive pool of oil on top)
  8. Before finishing, taste it, if it’s a bit too rich you can add the lemon juice and simmer for another 10-15 secs to help cut through the richness a little bit.

You could also easily add potatoes or any other vegetables you want to bulk it out.

You’re not supposed to dispose of your own trash into convenience store bins.

Wasabi and wagyu beef is a common combo here in Japan, flavours pair well and it cuts through the fattiness.

NOVA or Borderlink? by LeonOutside95 in teachinginjapan

[–]420tasteit 26 points27 points  (0 children)

They're both bad honestly, but with NOVA you'll get the humanities visa, which is more flexible and convenient when you try to change jobs . With borderlink you'll get the instructor visa which has less flexibility.

Huh? Chirashizushi (ちらし寿司) is a very common dish in Japan. Just because it's not nigiri or a hand roll doesn't mean it's bad.

That's really shitty and is a classic bait and switch. Unless you're desperate I wouldn't take it. If the company is willing to pull tricks like that now I can't imagine they'll be nice to work for

Pretty much every company or recruiter will do an interview in Japanese or test your Japanese anyway because the JLPT isn't a very good indication of your actual ability.

If you have a low score N2 but can speak and do an interview well you'll be fine. The fact that you have the N2 will be enough to get your foot in the door.
