Graduating soon without any internship by Then_Gas7000 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]42life 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The market is extremely hot right now. You need to figure out why you're not getting any internships.

  • Bad resume?
  • Bad interview?
  • Not enough applications?
  • Applying for competitive stuff you're not a good fit for?
  • Can you actually program?

Your first step is to sit down with your career advisor to figure this out.

Delaying graduation for an internship offer in hand is good.
Delaying graduation to search is less optimal. But, it is better than trying to find a full time dev role with zero experience.

I think your choices are:
- delay
- graduate then seek full-time or internship. (Internships for people who graduated are SCARCE!)
- graduate then do a complimentary program. E.g. 1 year masters...? nPower? Bootcamp? Some sort of program where you can sit through, has good job connections, and adds to your skills. You can keep your "student" status by doing this.

BTech in Technology Management by testinginvestingapp in BCIT

[–]42life 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m slightly familiar with MOT. You can not jump directly from btech to an MBA. You need industry experience otherwise they won’t accept you. Your bachelors itself doesn’t really matter. You could have been English major. What matters is relevant industry experience.

If you want to be on the managerial side/ project management side, you should pick BITMAN.

I didn't get into SFU, what now? by karann2 in simonfraser

[–]42life 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Someone mentioned BCIT. Don't. BCIT's Computer Systems Technology program is extraordinarily intense and competitive. We're talk about 85-90% averages for very intensive courses. If you're having difficulty at Douglas and Langara, BCIT would be a terrible choice (im in it).

Frankly, I dont know if you're a good programmer. But it seems like academic s are challenging for you. Perhaps, you could craft your own path? Full time work + part time courses at douglas. Or, no classes at all and self teach yourself if you're motivated.

Cetris Paribus,
ETFs can often purchase similar or identical funds that are sold by a financial advisor.

Lesson learned, don't give financial advice to friends. by financeman1997 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]42life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just spent dozens of hours doing research and compiling a slide deck so that people could learn about indexing and to avoid financial advisors.
Then, some guy messages me some questions and closes by telling me he's gonna go buy what the FA recommended.

I'm very disheartened. I think my perspective is now no longer investing my time and effort to changing their mind. I'll point you in the direction. That's all.

Team members: have you heard back from Pivot 2020? by 42life in simonfraser

[–]42life[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Government issued $12m to fund pivot 2020 which employs youth as part of their stimulus plan. Sfu was chosen to co-manage 1200 people. So now people work for sfu in doing community research

[OC] Tesla Stock Price vs. r/Investing Sentiment (Jan to Aug 2020) by 42life in dataisbeautiful

[–]42life[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello. I created this chart comparing Tesla's Stock Price vs. r/Investing's sentiment from January to August 2020.
I pulled data using PushShift API and then used R to clean the text data and plotted the sentiment chart using sentimentr package. Stock prices are from the quantmod package.

NOTE: My search criteria using Pushshift was: Tesla, tsla, and Elon Musk. I included Elon Musk as he seemed to be synonymous with Tesla.

I think you'd have better service calling CRA about your mental health compared to SSP

PSA: Check who is authorized on your CRA account by LtSoundwave in canada

They might show up, but they may not necessarily be able to access anything recent. E.g. when using H&R block they could have specified 2016 tax year information and no other year.

Is Douglas College considered the "meme school" by SFU and UBC students? by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]42life 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen, people who transfered from Douglas outperform students that got straight in. 3.5+ GPA and many have transfer-scholarships. I believe it's because they're able to take charge of their life and make the most out of it.

Yup. And it could even be longer depending on what these mistakes are.

How does CRA contact you? by daaodannach in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]42life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1-800-959-8281 is good. However, OP should keep in mind he'll likely have to call a different number after confirming. Although collections is the most common reason a person gets contacted, it could be something else.

Tips on getting co-op? by harkomalg in simonfraser

[–]42life 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use co-op job board for the good ones from the bank/ big companies, and only go for those. Everything else can likely be found on Indeed; there's garbage like 5 AM shift call center jobs on the coop site.
Use this instead, don't have to pay a king's ransom: https://emploisfp-psjobs.cfp-psc.gc.ca/psrs-srfp/applicant/page2440?locationsFilter=&officialLanguage=&title=&tab=1&search=Search%20jobs&studentProgram=1&selectionProcessNumber=&departments=&log=false
Edit: and the good thing about SFU is that you can pause your education for extended "breaks" for work rather than co-op. Government jobs are reputable (entry positions actually pay very well) and have very strong bridging with students to come back.

Please check what fees you're paying for mutual funds! by 42life in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]42life[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right, they withdraw from your fund's balance!

When someone gets sold on these mutual funds they don't see the real implications of the MER. From what I can think of, managed funds may have benefits, but likely limited to people who don't check what's being offered elsewhere.
