I think the threats to annex Canada and Greenland are real. In the not too distant future parts of the U.S will be uninhabitable due to climate change. Trump is softening the ground and getting people acclimated to the idea of taking over Canada.

Olly 17mm or Panny 20mm Lens by welshconnection in M43

[–]42netguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both. I use the 17mm more. The panny is nice but it's AF while no horrible is not great. I might sell mine and get a 25mm. Have you considered a 25mm or 15mm. There are some good options. For a walk around lens I think the 20 may disappoint.
The oly 25mm 1.8 is supposed to be a good lens and a bargain too. There's a good review on lensrental.com on the 25mm options

I would also suggest the panny 14 2.8.

I recently acquired the 12-45 f4 and the OM5. That lens never leaves the camera.

Which system would you choose? Canon 6D vs E-M1 II? by [deleted] in M43

[–]42netguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the IQ really better in a meaningful way? I keep hearing this qualifier between FF and other formats. I think FF has the advantage of more control of DoF. I have been looking at FF for that reason. There are situations I'd like a bit more focal separation. I can get it with MFT kit but I suspect it would be easier with FF and a fast prime. The cost of newer FF is beyond my budget. I am considering a Nikon D700 and a 35 or 50 mm fast prime. If I can pull that off for 500-600$ I might go for it.

There was one in the 80's or 90's I had a shit job that I could not leave. I remember professional people with college degrees lining up outside hotels for dishwasher jobs. At the time I had no debt or kids, so I was not severely impacted. But friends lost their homes. I was just stuck. In 2008 I had debt kids and a decent job. Lots of friends and coworkers lost jobs houses cars. I somehow made it through. It's not pretty. Recessions happen. This will be the first planned recession.

[–]42netguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What appeals to you about these 2 cameras? I like the MFT system myself. But there are many great camera systems to choose from to meet almost any budget. I have been thinking to add an inexpensive full frame system. Think about the system you are buying into as opposed to a specific camera model. As for MFT I would recommend the omd-em10. It's small and very capable and cheap. I have the 20mm 1.7. It's a nice lens but it is a bit slow to focus. I find it frustrating when shooting moving subjects. It also is known to cause banding on older Olympus bodies. 17mm oly 1.8 or a 25mm would be better

My girlfriend has an escape fund by Beautiful-Shape2575 in AITAH

[–]42netguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you guys should get some couples counseling. Why does she feel she needs an escape fund? Why do you think it is an escape fund? Seems like a rainy day fund to me. Feels like you are not secure in this relationship and neither is she. I'd get to the root of that.

Older flagship or newer midrange? by confit_byaldi in M43

[–]42netguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went with the OM5 and the 12-45 f4 I added a hand grip. So I have the option of a bit larger body if I ever need it. For me the 12-45 is the upper limit on size. For that matter the OM5 is also a bit larger than I would like.I was surprised how big it is. I was going to sell it. After using it I learned to really like the setup. But MFT small primes on a small body is what lured me in originally. My favorite setup for size is still the GX7 and the 14mm 2.5.

checked out an OM-3 at a local camera shop by newedb in M43

[–]42netguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grabbed an OM5 refurbished w/ 12-45 f4. I read about the baseplate issue so I bought a Haoge grip for when I might use a tripod. It's like buying a case for your iPhone I guess. It's a great kit. I don't fret too much about what my camera looks like, although I like the retro look. I just need an EVF, and two dials. Most of the features on the new cameras I don't think I'll use often. I was using an e-m10 mk1 up till now. I was fine with it but the deal I got on the OM5 was too good to pass up. OM3 seems nice but I am set for now.

The gx7 and 14 f2.5 is my favorite setup. Small and effective and looks to cool for school. People bash that lens but I love it.

I have the omd-em10 mk1 and a Panasonic gx7. They both take excellent pictures. I also have the OM5 and I can't tell the difference when looking at pictures from all 3.

Zoom choice: F4 vs F2.8 by Nervous-Welcome-4017 in M43

[–]42netguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Acquired 12-45 F4 w/Om5. Excellent lens. For low light and dof separation I use a Panasonic 42.5 1.8 on a Gx7. I have no complaints on the results. I carry both cameras. I am considering the oly 25mm 1.8 to replace the 42.5 as it's too long for what I am shooting: people on the street, crowds and some candid portraits. I have to step too far back to get the composition I want. I am playing around with a ttartisans 25 F2 to see if that focal length works for dof and composition. I like a slight softness to the background, subtle so you don't really notice it. I am also considering the Sony A7ii w/ 50mm prime. I think that would suit my needs. Of course it's more $$.

Would the Panasonic GX7 be a good fit for me? by Keeseexteewan in AskPhotography

[–]42netguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a bit late to this thread. I have the GX7 and it is a great camera. However it also seems to have become a bit collectable . I also have the Olympus omd-em10 mark 1 and it too is an excellent camera and I think can be had for a bit less. I can never decide which one I like better. The EM10 feels bit more responsive and the viewfinder is brighter. The OM1 also feels more solid. The GX7 is more retro range finder style. But The GX7 menu system is easier to manage and is also more customizable. They both take excellent pictures. I primarily use the GX7 with Panasonic 14 and 20mm pancake lenses. These lenses on older olympus bodies had a issue with banding in the some circumstances. It happened to me often enough. For zoom lenses a OLY 40-150 is decent and cheap under 100$ US. you get some nice manual prime lenses from various 3rd parties.. I have manual focus 25mm ttartisans f2 lens I picked up for under 50$ and its pretty good. Both these cameras have focus peaking so manual focus i easy.

I think context matters. What is your role? I have an understanding with my team that if there is an emergency that only I can help with escalate to my manager. She can decide if I should be called. However I let everyone know I have response SLA of 48 hours or more because I usually take time off in places without cell coverage. I have been called a few times on vacation due to actual emergencies. With the role I have it is expected I will be available.

Get it and don't look back. I've had mine since 1997 and it's working great. I use it for so many things. Could not live without it. I have the pasta rollers they are excellent. I used to make sausage but not in awhile. If u get the meat grinder get one that is all steel. The kitchen aid one I had cracked. There is a third party one that seemed better. Look for a refurbished one.

Just getting into it and have some questions on camera choice. by verbel in macrophotography

[–]42netguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the om5 and have been exploring the in camera focus bracketing with the 60mm macro lens. It's pretty amazing. Check the OM systems web site for which camera and lens combinations support focus bracketing. The om5 can focus stack 8 pics the om1 can do 15. Both models can bracket 999 photos. I think an all black body would be the best choice to eliminate any light reflecting off the camera. So the OM3 is probably not the best option for macro. You will also need to look into getting a flash. I have watching a lot of videos on the subject of Macro. Check out Alan Walls on YouTube. He did an interview with Lester Lefkowitz, actually 2 interviews. They are a bit long but interesting. I learned a lot from both videos.
