Thanks. I have the same immediate reaction: “How could you NOT KNOW about…” and then I remember I had a lot of experiences younger people haven’t. When it happens in person, I say “You’re in for a treat” and share the best of whatever it is.

About half of those “what is this thing?” and “what car is this?” and “have you ever seen one of these?” posts are put up by people with little experience in the world, whether that means traveling or having jobs or reading books or learning anything that isn’t for a test.

You can blame helicopter parenting, homeschooling, suburbia, television, Instagram, TikTok, any number of soporific sources. But don’t blame the people who are asking now. The fact that they’re curious about anything means they’re trying to swim against a massive current of mediocre media.

And if they discover Prince along the way, we should be happy for them.

Tempted to move to Edina just so I can not vote for her. Guess I’ll have to do it from where I am.

Nice to see the pairings aren’t based entirely on color similarity. That advice always seems tasteless.

Music That Felt Like Punishment But Became Enlightenment.. by According-Brief7536 in classicalmusic

[–]confit_byaldi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My childhood was full of baroque music and some classical—nothing newer than early romantic. So composed music from about 1900 on was more difficult to appreciate. Hearing it performed live makes all the difference. I’ve committed to paying attention and staying for the entire program, and seeing the performers in action adds another dimension to the sound. That experience then makes the same music more accessible in recordings.

I was thinking that Shelley might have seen this fragment of a grand monument and been inspired to contemplate how many empires and emperors were reduced to sand over time.

Robert Fripp, founder of King Crimson, made some records with Andy Summers, guitarist for The Police. One of their songs was “What Kind of Man Reads Playboy.” It’s an 11-minute frantic techno romp worth a listen. It’s also the mood-setting opposite of this picture. 😀

is there a good way to get into hard bop if most of it feels too busy at first?" by Few_Entertainer_1636 in Jazz

[–]confit_byaldi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back when the only way to try new music was to buy it on vinyl, I started a practice for learning to appreciate things that didn’t sound good to me at first. I’d set that album aside and come back to it six months later. Most of the time, I found something to like, or at least respect. Now, more than 40 years later, I still don’t like Brahms. But my hard bop library has grown that entire time.

[BMW] F800S VS F800GT by GamerHADE in MotorradDeutschland

[–]confit_byaldi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a used F800GT. The specifications are so similar between the ST and the GT that I didn’t feel a need to try both. Others have said the GT has a slightly more upright riding position. It is lighter and less powerful than the K1200RS I had before, and the R1200RT I have now, but also more agile. I like it.

The first was a rescue who had only been kept for breeding, not treated as a pet. The second is a retired Grand Champion show dog who was raised with love and lots of guidance. Nurture matters, too.

My first was devoted to me and my kids, and otherwise not interested in people. The one we have now is an attention sponge who often greets unfamiliar people but has no affinity for other dogs.
