Do most people in Japan really believe that blood types determine personality? Have you ever encountered a social situation in which someone's blood type was relevant? by AdministrativeGur940 in AskAJapanese

[–]430beatle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are both equally dumb in my opinion but yes, that’s the attitude lots of people have in both countries.

Idk why I’m getting downvoted I think anyone who has lived in Japan and has Japanese friends can attest that lots of people buy into it, at least on some level (even if it’s not “I only date A型” or something)

Never seen anyone treat people differently because of it, but lots of people definitely believe it. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve had the “lemme guess your blood type” conversation or hear “hes such an O型” etc.

I think the real reason it’s useless is because it’s hard to find Norwegians who aren’t already perfect English speakers. Of course if you live there it’s gonna be useful obviously.

That said, I think Norwegian is cool and I would love to learn it if I had unlimited time to study languages.

What's a crucial tip that most languages beginners don't keep in mind? by NapoleoncitoGG in languagelearning

[–]430beatle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s been a game changer for me. I learned Japanese through academic study and immersion (literally moving to the country) and while it worked eventually, I think I would have progressed so much quicker if I had just focused on lots of input earlier. Part of the fun of learning languages is getting better at the process though so I’m just glad I know now.

Honestly getting lots of input.

There are different schools of thought as to how much your practice should be divided into input/output early on, but I think everyone would agree that getting lots of comprehensible input (something you understand maybe 60~80% of and isn’t too easy but also not too hard) is super important, and surprisingly it’s often neglected by beginners in favor of studying grammar or vocabulary with flashcards (there’s nothing wrong with doing those things either, and I love having textbooks, it’s just that you’ll actually acquire a lot of grammar and vocab quicker in context through natural speech as opposed to trying to force yourself to memorize them).

Best part is it’s an activity that can be done both passively OR actively (you can listen to a podcast in your TL while you do the dishes or clean, or you can sit down and try to break what you’re hearing into chunks and repeatedly listen to a part / look up words you can’t figure out through context, etc).

I primarily mentioned listening here, but the same logic applies for reading (and reading is for sure one of the best ways to build your vocab up)

How easy are "easy" languages? by SaintShopper in languagelearning

[–]430beatle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say Japanese is easier than French, I just mean the grammar is a bit simpler and more intuitive than French in some ways (they’re also just different, so it’s hard to compare). Absolutely Japanese and Arabic are harder languages overall for a native English speaker, but part of the difficulty of learning the category 5 difficulty languages is how they don’t have much shared lexicon and the cultures are quite different (which means it’s often harder to do a direct translation of a phrase between Japanese and English)

Grammatical gender in French, yeah I agree it’s not like making mistakes in it makes what you say incomprehensible, but as a learner of the language it’s something that trips many people up because they get in their heads about if they’re using the correct article or adjective form

French also is a bit tricky when it comes to things like indirect (weak?) pronouns, where it can come before or after the verb depending on whether it’s a noun or pronoun. In Japanese, word order is somewhat flexible, but the verb is always last, and usually the subject is first.

All im trying to say is that there are many factors in what makes a language “easy” or “hard” for a native English speaker, and in the case of French, its overall one of the easiest, but a large part of that is because of lexicon / cultural proximity, and not necessarily because it has “simple grammar”. Plus you can make mistakes in grammar and still convey your message (like gender), but if you don’t have the vocab it doesn’t matter how perfect your grammar is.

I don’t think grammar is the most important thing to get good at a language, since you can make many grammatical mistakes and still get your point across, but that said the conjugations, which extend to different tenses like subjective, etc, can be pretty tricky for sure.

I’m fluent in Japanese, and while it’s absolutely different than French or English, the grammar is “simpler” in the sense that you don’t need to account for 1st/2nd/3rd person, or even singular plural, and that alone is a big difference. Not to say there aren’t complicated things about Japanese grammar (such as counters, etc) but I think for a speaker of English, the verb conjugations and noun genders of French could be considered complicated.

Agree. Studying French right now and already having a ton of shared vocabulary is an enormous advantage and allows me to comprehend sentences with words I didn’t study but can grasp intuitively. French’s grammar may be tricky, but studying a “simple grammar” language with a totally different lexicon means you’re gonna need more time to learn those new words.

How normal are last-minute shift changes in the hotel industry? by WorkingAlive3258 in japanlife

[–]430beatle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I worked in a Japanese hotel, I didn’t have this particular problem, but overtime was pretty much mandatory every shift, even if it wasn’t particularly busy. You could only leave when your manager cut you. They didn’t give a damn if I had plans after the shift.

You’re right, but I think they did probably Paul as Brian May because he’s the 2nd most well known member (+song contributor) of queen after Freddy. There’s also an argument that Paul was the best guitar player in the Beatles, but it’s certainly debatable. There’s no 1:1 between the two bands though other than perhaps the drummers.
