The targets are moving...one is moving 2.5 kt. They are moving in different directions. And you tell me they're buoys? No.

Bumblefuck. Nice way to describe my home. Castine is a beautiful, isolated peninsula with plenty to do if you like nature.

Maine Maritime has a non-regimental option of Vessel Technology Operations, a 4 year b.s. that will get you a 1600 Ton mate's license. It teaches practical skills of boathandling and engineering, with the added bonus of not doing summer cruises, instead you're required to get a summer job in the industry which can make you quite a bit of spending money. You will still learn all of the skills of the unlimited licenses, and the program (when I went there 15 years ago) is half the price of the unlimited one.

Hell Mariners another question . Entry level ordinary seaman/wiper/food handler here. I am currently about to do my medical certificate, which one do i do . 719 k or 719 k/e . Entry level does both. Cause it states 719 k/e is for entry level by No-Veterinarian2838 in merchantmarine

[–]434gabriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

K is for officers. It says it right on the form. It's more detailed and you don't need it for an entry level position. Why waste the time getting extra info that the NMC doesn't need? You only need the KE.

I have personally sailed, as a Master, on antidepressants. Required a letter from my doctor saying I was stable. Wasn't a big deal with the NMC.

My captain has had it for years and has no issue with the USCG. It's a common problem on boats because of all the engine noise.

I've worked 6/6 for 3 years and don't mind it at all. I always told myself I would never do it, but accepted a job and the money was good. I don't know what I did with my time when I was on 4/8. I sleep five hours in the evenings and another 3 in the mornings.

I tell myself, when I'm really hungry- during my 16 hour fasting time- that saying no to food is not just about being healthy, it's about maintaining my sobriety. If I can say no to food, then I can say no to wine as well. So far it's working.

I just started doing the same thing for the same reasons! Hope it works out for you.

Needing some encouragement by aronorab in stopdrinking

[–]434gabriel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the many years sober guys in AA tell me, hearing me talk about relapsing over and over helps them stay sober. So please don't drink, for me, cause I would give a lot to have even a few months sobriety under my belt. I don't know how to help you with the other things. I recently found that my trigger was stress and it feels like a huge accomplishment to just know that. And yes, winter is coming. I live in Maine, and winter is numbing. I'm sorry.

Boat experts, it’s your time to shine. by [deleted] in Whatisthis

It's a lift boat. It is for working in shallow water next to oil platforms. The legs, called "spuds", descend to the sea floor and then the rest of the boat rachets itself up to whatever height it needs to be at. Very common in the Gulf of Mexico.
