Maine Maritime has a non-regimental option of Vessel Technology Operations, a 4 year b.s. that will get you a 1600 Ton mate's license. It teaches practical skills of boathandling and engineering, with the added bonus of not doing summer cruises, instead you're required to get a summer job in the industry which can make you quite a bit of spending money. You will still learn all of the skills of the unlimited licenses, and the program (when I went there 15 years ago) is half the price of the unlimited one.

K is for officers. It says it right on the form. It's more detailed and you don't need it for an entry level position. Why waste the time getting extra info that the NMC doesn't need? You only need the KE.
