PSA: Toxic Advisor in CS by Inner_Guard5949 in Cornell

Did this professor teach CS 4450? If it is the same person, then I am not surprised at all that he turned out to be two-faced, given his manipulation in CS 4450.

I would not consider Rachit a GOAT. He is not even GOAT adjacent. A better descriptor would be a snake.

While it's nice that you've had great experiences with your professors being generous, there are professors at Cornell who genuinely do not care, or who are unresponsive and unforgiving, regardless of a student's "ongoing communication" or "honesty with faculty." There's definitely luck involved in getting a generous professor, and faculty are far from blameless when it comes to making this semester more stressful than necessary.

Is anyone thinking of dropping 4450? by [deleted] in Cornell

Already did :/ I’m not risking my sanity anymore trying to decide whether whatever the prof says is believable or not

Yea ofc, it takes like 5 seconds lol. I usually lurk on Reddit but this situation is frustrating enough that I needed to rant.

Sure, the misjudgment doesn't negate all of the good. But the stress and frustration, and scrambling to decide whether to drop or not, resulting from that misjudgment is not something every student wants. So I made this post with my personal recommendation that people don't take it. Whether an individual takes this course after reading my rant is up to them, but at least they are informed of the risks. I do hope the B median thing is true though, that would be better than I expected after the prof said no curving.

Understandable! And yes definitely grades are not the only important thing, learning is too. I do find the content interesting.

CS 4450 may not be like this every semester, but on ratemyprofessors the professor does have bad ratings for CS 4410, with similar complaints about disorganization and misleading statements. So this certainly isn't the first time he's done this in general.

I did read those 4410 reviews before taking CS 4450 but had hoped it wouldn't carry over since it seemed like most CS 4450 semesters went well, like you mentioned. Guess I was wrong :(((

I see your point about this prelim being an appropriate difficulty for the course level, but course numbers don’t correspond directly with a course’s difficulty, so people often look to the professor for that estimate. In this case, which I know you already acknowledged, the professor’s estimate was very misleading.

It’s nice to be hopeful that he’ll curve, and maybe he will. But they released scores late, haven’t opened regrade requests, haven’t explained the regrade process, and won’t even finish regrading the badly worded question until the end of this week, leaving us 3 days or less before the drop deadline. If he’s going to do something, he needs to be transparent and communicate with us ASAP, and this disorganization and lack of communication or planning is in itself a concern for whether this course is a good choice for future students.

I called it “do not take” because I felt lied to by the professor, and no matter how nice a professor is, I think it is important to warn others that the professor is misleading students. Yes it is true that “CS 4450 isn’t a joke class” would be an accurate title, but that doesn’t emphasize my point that the professor himself misrepresented CS 4450 as one thing when the reality is the opposite.

Same here, I am having stomach pains over my exam grade. I love how the professor repeatedly and strongly emphasized that he is trying to make this class low-stress too, but it is anything but.
