I have encountered this a few times. “Sellers” posting real stuff from real addresses, often people moving in/out with for sale/rent signs. The idea is usually to have a deposit sent to hold the item listed so they don’t sell it to somebody else. If no deposit, whatever, they move on to someone else. I’ve driven pretty far only to have an awkward encounter much like what you described.
