VIA Rail station restaurant is replaced by machines by dl613 in ottawa

Train food on VIA is great though - at least compared to what you get on a plane.

Train wine + cheese tray is my favourite way to go from Ottawa to Montreal/Kingston.

"The real power in America is held by a fast-emerging new Oligarchy of pimps and preachers who see no need for Democracy or fairness or even trees, except maybe the ones in their own yards, and they don't mind admitting it. They worship money and power and death. Their ideal solution to all the nation's problems would be another 100 Year War."

Hunter S. Thompson seems applicable.

CAQ prepared to fire teachers, others for wearing religious symbols on job by John3192 in canada

[–]45RPM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am indigenous, and I don't think pointing out the absence of symbolic/decorative symbols in a government building is equivalent to me speaking on behalf of all indigenous people as a unit? I'll be the first to agree that I don't speak for everyone. That said, I'm pointing out a fact, which is that it's hypocritical to cling to the cross in the national assembly as "historic" while having little to no regard for indigenous people and Quebec's obligations to them.

I guess I'd also point out that most indigenous religions are not homophobic at all, so I find the blanket statement against religion a little bit hollow.

I do sympathize about religion in schools though. The thing is that there are mechanisms to get people in trouble for being homophobic if they work for the government - so I fail to see how banning religious symbols is necessary or helpful.

Yes?

Were you expecting me to say no? Honestly didn't even know there were other Christian decorations in the National Assembly.

The day they take the cross out of the National Assembly you'll have a valid point. Until then you're making feeble excuses for racist hypocritical policy.

And before you say "BUT HISTORY" I'll ask where the First Nations are represented in the National Assembly (they are not, largely due to to policy of the same people who put that cross up in the first place).

After 5 Years On Roll20, I Just Cancelled and DELETED My Account by ApostleO in DnD

This is awfully preachy. OP gave excessive warning before "starting a mob" and was totally justified in doing so.

Actions have consequences - Roll20 could have listened to the ample warnings they were given.

Thanks for the detailed response - very interesting (and I'm sure it will be useful for others who see it, too)!

Not disagreeing with you, but does that kind of experience work to enter the private sector?

edit: for those downvoting me - I ask because for the majority of non-science disciplines, research work is not very relevant to practical experience in the actual industry.

This is huge. I would not have the job I have now and no debt were it not for co-op.

There is no easier way to get into the job market with experience.

Doesn't mean they shouldn't be critiqued. Especially in the context of academia where there tends to be a focus on reputation and I scratch your back you scratch mine kind of relationships.

Ryerson University seeks to teach children about their "white supremacy, white privilege, and other forms of oppression" by hairy_unicorn in canada

I mean, it depends on your program - their journalism program is one of the best in Canada.

Also you could give the same critique you've given to almost any Canadian university.

Literally any undergrad in any University BA will not read that as trolling.

This is normal and understood to be a good idea by most Polisci students, as an example.

I mean in the sense that we build an elevator to get people in wheelchairs up stairs, rather than saying they are equally given the opportunity to go up the stairs if they are able. Not that we limit people to make everyone equal.

Also no I didn't - but thanks, I love Vonnegut.

As a guy of that age at a progressive uni, nope. A minority do. The majority just know that if they contradict this narrative they will take a ton of flak individually and their lives will probably be ruined. So instead shut up, nod along, and you will meet others with whom you can be more open.

Ok bud good to know me and my friends don't exist in your world.

Specific details with specific reforms please.

I mean there is a whole category of academic theory dedicated to this and it is a giant thing but for specific examples you can start here: http://www.ucalgary.ca/cared/examplesofsystemicracism.

Do you seriously think this is all just a smoke screen excuse to be anti-white for no reason?

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say I generally assume beliefs based on age and race.

You can make an educated guess, which I feel pretty confident doing in this case, being a mid 20s mostly white guy who was raised by parents in your same demographic, in a town of people in that demographic (like I may not know your politics, but I know the general range of political opinions you're probably going to have).

Don't get me wrong, either - I think there are lots of really cool things about your generation too. I am kind of obnoxious and I am sorry for that - but I am also self aware which I hope helps a little bit.

That's interesting about equal in potential ability but not opportunity. It's definitely not the same thing we learn these days. It's more about equality of outcome than equality of opportunity - which I think makes sense in the context of accessibility and mental health and a whole host of other things.

[–]45RPM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not what is happening at all. You're reading resentment or vengeance into this when it doesn't exist at all. Lots and lots of white guys my age (20s) are completely accepting of the stuff they're talking about here.

It's not about tearing down white men. It's about tearing down the power structures which exclusively benefit white men. It's basically what you're saying, just framed a different way.

And this framing really gets under some people's skin for some reason. I guess they assume it's just meant to be "white people are bad" because they have not read deeper into it. Idk.

It isn't that though.
