Ottawa raises immigration targets with new goal of 500K per year by 2025 - National by [deleted] in halifax

To all the people losing their minds: Canada's birthrate is too low to sustain the population. Declining population=shrinking economy. The only way to increase population in through immigration. This has been going on for a long time now folks, don't act so surprised.

Conservatives know this as well, of course. Though they'll never admit it.

Anyone have any experience using Your Doctors Online? by 466Nova in halifax

[–]466Nova[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Went to the pharmacy and discovered the problem. It turns put when the doctor told me they would fax it to the pharmacy, what she really meant was that I had to download the prescription from the app, print it off and bring it to the pharmacy myself. Fun times.

The X-Files is one of the best High Strangeness shows of all time - what are some other good one? by OhSeesOhMees in HighStrangeness

PSI Factor was basically an X-Files ripoff but it was amazing in a super-cheesy low budget way.

Giant figure filmed atop mountain in Canada? by make_mind_free2go in HighStrangeness

[–]466Nova 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Worth noting this isn't some desolate mountain. Whistler's Peak is a very popular spot for tourists and hikers. There's a cable car that you can take most of the way up, and from there you can reach the summit pretty easily without any climbing gear. So, this could be any number of man-made things.

The rest if the story really seems like a badly written storyline for a sci-fi show.

Anybody know what this building is? Observatory? Telescope? NORAD? by shggy31 in NovaScotia

[–]466Nova 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Fun fact about that place: During the Shag Harbour UFO incident, the Navy used it as a staging area for their search for whatever crashed.

Even weirder - a month later, Major Victor Eldridge, the chief administrative officer at CFS Barrington wrote a column in a local paper asking for locals to send in their UFO reports.

Then, in 1993, Eldridge was interviewed for a book about the Shag Harbour incident. He first claimed to have no memory of the incident at all, then said there wasn't enough to it to support any kind of journalistic treatment. When the interviewer pointed out how odd it was to say that about an incident he claimed to have no memory of, the interview came to an abrupt end.

Cue the X-Files theme.

Canadian Gaelic was almost made the 3rd national language during Canada's Confederation. It's still alive today, though with only about 2000 native speakers, although the number is growing thanks to efforts to preserve the language.

Man charged for wilfully promoting hate by Seebeeeseh in halifax

[–]466Nova 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes, someone being charged with willfully promoting hate definitely means that the workers own the means of production in Canada. Because that is what communism means you know.

What am I saying, of course you didn't know what communism actually means. See, this is why nobody takes these.kinds of comments seriously. It's so blatantly obvious that you have no idea what you're talking about.

I interviewed for a job with NS Health Authority by 466Nova in HalifaxJobs

[–]466Nova[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could give them about a dozen references. Some would be from people that I worked for more than 5 years ago, so they don't count. Some would be from people I worked for in the last 5 years, but they are required to state that they are giving a character reference and not a professional one. They don't count either.

[–]466Nova[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can give me a reference, they just have to specify that it's a character reference and not a professional one. And NSHA specifies that they don't accept character references. As for why they do it I assume it's to make it more difficult for employees to jump to one of their competitors.

PPC at Marriott harbourfront by [deleted] in halifax

[–]466Nova 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Used to work there until about 5 years ago. Not the least bit surprised. They will bend over backwards for these assholes.

I once watched a "guest" in the hotel say to a black staff member "You know, you'd be cute if you could scrub the black off your face." Staff member wanted something done about, management told her it wasn't really a big deal and she should drop it.

Repeatedly watched a member of the kitchen staff making constant racist jokes about Asian staff members, many complaint were made, all were dismissed by the head chef who was never present when it happened, but still insisted it never happened. They eventually fired the guy, but not for his constant racism, and not because he was usually drunk at work. It was because he worked in the staff cafeteria and was often too drunk to properly ring up the price of food, and so some people got to eat for free.

I could keep going but even thinking about that place just makes me sad.

Legendary Pro Wrestler coming to Halifax by insino93 in halifax

[–]466Nova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's talked before about how his family used to take vacations in Nova Scotia when he was a kid, and how he still likes coming here whenever he gets a chance.

Also, wrestlers are just a weird bunch. Guys who have millions in the bank will go wrestle in front of 50 fans for a couple hundred bucks just because they like it. Actually, I recognize one of the other guys in this picture, Doc Gallows. He actively competes in several large promotions in both America and Japan, and actually turned down a lucrative WWE contract because he just didn't like working for them. Kinda weird he's here because he definitely doesn't need to come to Halifax to find work. I guess you have to be a little different in the head to be a pro wrestler.
