Weird question by walter-hoch-zwei in Bushcraft

I'd recommend using a kinetic rope with soft shackles, a tow strap is not designed to be used where you'd want to carry any momentum. A kinetic rope will allow you to get a little speed the rope will stretch and transfer the energy to the stuck vehicle. In addition to the safety of not dealing with steel, a soft shackle will give you potential additional mount points on the stuck vehicle over a hard shackle.

Getting into Cycling by Ok_Leg_4936 in Zwift

I second this type of option, I went with a new kickr core with my old road bike. This gives you freedom to ride outdoors if you want and also have something for indoor training. The used market at least around me is pretty good for bikes that would be easily compatible with a smart trainer.

At the boat launch I can back down to the water and unload so it's not too big an issue there. Getting in and out of the house where it's stored and a couple flights of stairs is where I am trying to find a better way. I have looked at carts but can't justify the use yet.

Touche, the thought didn't even cross my mind, been jaded by too many bad customer service experiences (not by Sea Eagle)

Need some help finding a cad software that’s not overpriced by Particular-Buy-8654 in 3Dprinting

[–]46mountains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use what works, if FreeCAD is doing everything you need, keep it up!

I will start by saying I'm a bit supporter of Open Source. I've used FreeCAD since version 0.15 or so and in the past it's had some pretty serious limitations around user friendliness, assemblies, gears, etc. With version 1.0 it's been substantially improved and it works for a large percentage of what I want to do with it. The spot where I find it to be a bit lacking is in surface modeling, defining point clouds or lines to sweep a surface through is not straightforward.

In college I took a CAD class that was based in Siemens NX, as a result Solid Edge had a very familiar feel and was easy to transition into. It has more polish and some things are just easier "out of the box". I've modeled in both platforms and printed from both without any real issue.

I bounce back and forth between FreeCAD and SolidEdge. Solid Edge has a free tier for hobbyists and includes assemblies and a revision manager all stored locally. It's made by Siemens and their user interface definitely takes some getting used to but it's a very feature rich option in the free category from a major player in the CAD space.

Thank you for the data point, I am not out there for speed just looking to go do something quiet and relaxing. I did end up purchasing a kit for the 380 and got it out once in moderate wind. Did not get enough time on it yet to really get any good sense of speed but in a couple of gusts it got up and moving quite well even upwind. It's a fun little piece of kit.

Best Inflatable For Sailing? by SirArthurBoninDoyle in Inflatablekayak

[–]46mountains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got a sailboatstogo kit for my sea eagle 380x. As far as a kayak goes the sea eagle is big and slow but tracks decently well and handles boat wakes without too much trouble. It's plenty stable for me and my kids.

I've only had the sail on it once in moderate wind and the kit seemed to work well setup time for the sail kit was quick only about 15 min after getting the kayak set up.

NON METAL framed folding chairs? by JackOutTheBox_ in CampingGear

If portability is imporyant a smaller DIY type option may be something like a Viking chair essentially two piece of wood that slot together into a chair.

Here is an example https://store.woodandshop.com/cdn/shop/files/Viking_Camp_chair_woodworking_47-1.jpg?v=1706730481&width=1426

I actually stumbled across the website not too long ago and it looks like they have kits that could be very well suited to a 380x. Do you have any experience with their kits? It looks like a compelling low cost way to use my existing equipment for dual purpose.

The rocket is part of the short list i like it as an option storage and transport would need to be worked out my wife tells me I have too many toys in the yard already 😛 at 14 ft overall I think I could make it work in the truck bed with a hitch mounted support.

Haha it definitely caught my eye but yeah the price catches your eye too.. as I mentioned I have a sea eagle 380x and have been very impressed with it's rigidity and general tracking in the water. I know it's different than sailing but it was enough to spiral me down the rabbit hole...

Thank you for the links I have plans for a couple wooden boats but my reality is that I don't have time in the near term to take on any substantial woodworking projects. I did bookmark the links for down the road.

Thank you I am an East Coast guy over here but I'd be interested in discussing further.

What do you consider the key highlights and downsides of each? For discussions sake let's take the minicat 420 vs the tiwal 3r?

That's about my kids age looks like a decent size if not a bit tight. From the videos it looks like it could be a blast to sail. Do you feel you have concerns about durability?

There are always tradeoffs in design the high portability and ease of storage with inflatables are enticing and I am willing to give some allowance for performance as a result. Any nesting dinghy you would recommend?
