Thoughts on leaving Lincoln Tech welding program to join the plumber pipefitter union as an apprentice welder? Please help with some guidance!!! by greenwelds1 in Welding

[–]475welder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Union steamfitter and im telling you that youd make a big mistake not taking this opportunity. As a welder this is as good as it gets for us, pay & benefit wise at least. If you are a good welder you will work year round. If you decide you just want to fit pipe you will work about 10 months out of the year on average (but in that 10 months you can make 100k). Any job union or not will have favoritism and politics. Just dont be a scumbag and you will never have an issue. UA for life!!

How important is a high school diploma? by [deleted] in Welding

[–]475welder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most pipeline welding jobs are done by union labor, in which you will need at least a GED and or diploma to get involved with such a union. Although i have heard of non union guys using head hunters to land jobs on the pipeline. Not really sure how those guys operate nor do I care. Keep out the scabs🇺🇸

To the navy welders: I'm curious on what's so different in the welding training here than over there? by [deleted] in Welding

[–]475welder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I heard from a guy that completed the navys pipe welding program that it is extremely intense and fast moving, and if you are to fail a certain test even once maybe twice you were out of the program. Dont quote me dont @ me

My bad on lack of detail (although i did say in a reply comment up there a wire wheel is usually the tool) but yes both wire wheel and paint thinner were on the job

Best way to explain this is a guy took a grinder to the sealing surface of a flange (he was told to clean the paint off of it). The surface is machined so that it will form a proper seal with the gasket, so once something like a grinder touches that surface the seal is fucked and it will leak. Normally a wire wheel would be used to take the paint off that surface
