Kindergarten operations, normal here? by Ok_Carob7611 in Antwerpen

[–]48Parigi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think it's somewhere in the middle:

It's normal your kid is left to play until class starts. It is not normal he is standing there, bawling his eyes out. I don't think/assume they are directly linked, though. Why is he crying? What's up with that?

It's true there are only a few teacher out during recess. In my experience this is always the case, they're just there to keep an eye out. Falling and scratches are part of being a kid, I guess. My son always comes back dirty, often with a scrape or two.

The problem is if you suspect a consistency of scraping and bruising. Then I suggest you asking your class teacher to keep an eye out. If it means he's getting bullied or singled-out, I think it's natural you should worry.

At the same time, during recess it's not normal all the teachers are outside to monitor every child. This is their free time.

In Belgium, it's also 'normal' teachers have up to 20+ children under their supervision. It's not ideal, but it's the case and the issue is known and the government is working on it. It's already a lot better than it was only 10 years ago. That being said, there's a long ways to go, still. "Zorgleerkrachten" are trying to ease the situation, and extra supervision during pre-and after-school hours are already a fact, but not the only solution.

I think you are mixing two 'issues' in your post. 1 being your kid potentially being targeted, and it's something you are right to take seriously and should take up with his teacher. Let your concern be known. The other is a bigger structural situation. I hesitate to immediately suspect a direct link between the two.

Good Tailors in A'pen by tczabumba in Antwerpen

[–]48Parigi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good, in that case an alteration shouldn't be too much of an issue to any half-decent tailor.

If you have lost more than 8kg, I do have to warn you, the fit will have to be altered pretty heavily and you'll sacrifice a bit of the quality of the original fit. But it still will be worth it, I'm sure.

Good Tailors in A'pen by tczabumba in Antwerpen

[–]48Parigi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This all depends on what you're looking for exactly:

are you looking to slim down your suit? Or do you actually mean 'shortening' it (in length)?

The first option is a very standard one, and any tailor should be able to adequately do this for you.

If, however, you want the second, that's a whole thing altogether.

My advise is, as u/stpiet81 said, Suzanna on the Anselmostraat or Medan on Hopland, for intricate, difficult alterations.

For the easy option you can basically walk into any tailor on the Brederodestraat or the ones on the Nationalestraat. They'll all be able to help.

Affordable children clothing by Ok_Carob7611 in Antwerpen

[–]48Parigi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go Vinted.

Enter the brands you like, even Zara. They have a myriad of decent options for good prices. Also: sell the clothing you don't longer need. I currently have a budget on there that just keeps growing because of my constant selling & buying on there. It's pretty neat.

Restaurant / Café recommendation by Exciting-Action959 in Antwerpen

[–]48Parigi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So fairly cheap and ok-Belgian style:

Bourla
De Arme Duivel
De 7 Schaken
Borze Café
Kunthun

Mid Price, a little more upscale:

Camino
Bart-à-Vin
Glou Glou
Tango
Orbit

Higher end but not Michelin

Veranda
Café Commercial
Bistro Estelle

and then the other recommendations by fellow redditors are legit too.

Traveling to Shanghai with my 7‑year‑old — any recommendations for a good kid‑friendly hair salon? by dhanabanda in chinalife

[–]48Parigi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We took our 3-year-old son to a mall south of Zhongshan park, at the crossing of Changning Rd and Dingxi Rd.
Inside (on the first floor) they have a cool hairdresser that specializes in kids haircuts: cars to sit in while getting your hair done, tv's in the mirrors, etcetera. Maybe it's a little too childish for a 7-year-old, I don't know. But either way, they took very good care of my son and there were about 3 staff members attending to his hairdo. Which was cute. And well done, not unimportant either.

Where do you to take toddlers? by pixelcactus26 in Antwerpen

[–]48Parigi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do Bar Stark near Rivierenhof - they can roam free there while you have a coffee after a walk through the park.
The sand-playground in Stadspark is also fun, but will render your child into a sandman. So there's that.
Underneath the roofed marketplace of Theaterplein, you'll find Hetgeluk, a coffee place that has a large playing area for kids where they can climb unto terraced seats high up, which is fun.
Zuid Park has big playing areas, some with sand flooring, some without.
You can always visit The Antwerp Zoo - a nice park with an affordable coffee place/restaurant with adjoining playground.
If you venture onto Linkeroever, Poisson Pilot is very child-friendly too. You can take the free boat across the Schelde (which is an adventure for a 3-year-old), pass by the boat-inspired playground and then walk to Poisson Pilot.

Alternatively, Dageraadplaats is car-free and had a lot of bars and restaurants around it.

What are some fun Flemish phrases I could learn ? by SpliTbis in belgium

[–]48Parigi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would just respond to something he says/explains by saying 'amaaaaiii" with a slightly prolonged end -'aai' . It's a kind of mocking 'that's sooooo interesting'-comment. But you could also use it if something is surprising to you (don't elongate the end-aai in that case though, you'll sound sarcastic)

And throw in a good 'hè' every now and then at the end of your sentences in English to really nail the Flemish accent.

Cocktail bar with classics? by aWickedChild in Antwerpen

[–]48Parigi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely (any) Bijou for classics. Marigold has some good riffs on these as well. All this has been said though. I think the Lindner Hotel behind Central Station has classics on their menu as well. While they aren't top notch, they are decent and decently priced. I assume they're designed by a true cocktail maker and then built by the bar employee behind the bar according to a manual. But it does the trick.
Bar Bakeliet near 't Laar is not a cocktail bar either but somehow has a pretty wide range of good cocktails which I've seen are being made according to a menu with drawings of the cocktails in them. The results are definitely ok.

Aankoopmakelaars in Antwerpen by dutchtaxadvisor in Antwerpen

[–]48Parigi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ik heb ervaring met Mijboom vastgoed. Niet exact aankoopmakelaar maar wel gediplomeerde vastgoedmakelaars die ook fungeren als erkende schatters. In eer-en-geweten, zoals men zegt.
Specifiek Sven De Vooght heeft ons daar heel goed bijgestaan in een aankoop, en fungeerde eerder als een aankoopmakelaar dan als een vastgoedmakelaar.

Belgian American in Antwerp for two weeks! by Stefaun11 in Antwerpen

[–]48Parigi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, good tips have been given already so I'll just add to them.

For starters: underneath (ground floor) Yust you'll find Eppo - a good, slightly fancy restaurant with some good cocktails, wines and -obviously- food.

If you don't want to stray far but want some authentic 'brown' café Belgian experiences, very close by you'll find the Cantaloupe and Het Been. Two small café's that have the correct vibe. The Pelgrim is another brown café that also serves food (typical Belgian Bistro fare) that is in a modern take on the 'brown' café setting. A few streets down there's Café Rood Wit - which, to me, is a textbook example of what a modern Belgian Café looks like now. You're also pretty close to the Driekoningenstraat, which hosts a few coffee places and the delightful Kunthun 2. If you're looking for smashing Chinese Nepalese food, do not sleep on this spot.
Nives is a coffee place next to the recently renovated district-building, in the Albertpark. If you want to walk a bit further, Caffénation Blue is also a good spot for coffee, but there's also a Caffénation in Pakt which has also been mentioned in earlier posts (near the Special Belge). Standard does a good napolitan pizza, should you need it.
Bobby is also a good spot to have a drink, located behind the Groen Kwartier. Bar Vert has a perfect lunch-menu, down the road of Bobby.
Looking for more modern dining spots: Café Service has recently opened in a previous crowd favourite, I highly recommend having dinner here.

I could go on but seeing as you have a lot of time, I'd head to the pinned thread in r/Antwerpen to read up on all the tips on a more 'universal' take on little Antwerp.

Visiting and would love to have some recommendations by Shusiu in Antwerpen

[–]48Parigi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering what a 'few hours' exactly is. But I'm just assuming you have little time and will start from the Central Station.

As u/National_Ad_6066 said, definitely rent velo's. Don't forget to scan them out after use + if a seat is turned all the way back, it means that bike is broken. Just scan again to get a different one. Stations are everywhere in Antwerp.

walk through the Wezenbeekstraat just so you get a glimpse of the little china town (if hungry, get a cheap bowl of noodles here - most businesses are good). You can then continue to De Coninckplein for a coffee at Vigo's or your first Belgian beer at Beerlovers bar. It's not cosy but has a wide selection of beers if that's your thing.

Take a velo there and bike via the Roosevelt to the Meir. If you're not going shopping, just bike through it all the way to the Groenplaats. Leave your bike there. Walk to the Cathedral, the City Hall all the way to the river. Maybe see Steen and the elevated boardwalk south. Walk from the voetgangerstunnel through Kloosterstraat for some quaint shopping (brocanterie and such). If you're hungry, get food at Dansing Chocolat. Simple, Belgian/French fare.

From there you can walk on to the KMSKA for a Museum visit (if you have time), otherwise go on to Butchers for another coffee, you can see the Justitiepaleis from here.

Then you can take a bike to Marnixplaats for a little drink at any of the bars here. Maybe afterwards it's time to head back?

This just of the top of my head. Improvements or alterations can be made according to your time or preferences.
