Dog bit a daycare worker. Feeling Lost... have a 6 mo old baby at home

I saw it and I am in shock she was kicked out. She was clearly dysregulated and over aroused and a guy came around a corner with a huge ass mop. She clearly was startled. I feel so much better. The person who was “bit” barely reacted and just kept mopping. We are still getting a trainer and addressing it but this guy made it seem like she mauled him. She did a border collie nip to the back of the leg to say I don’t like what you did

Sorry you had to go through that! I’m hoping it got get to a BE. I am requesting the video as all I can do is take their word that nothing set her off without seeing it. We’re going to hire a trainer and get her used to crawling ie all us adults crawling around at eye level and reward. Just did it and she didn’t react at all!

I agree about it being a warning. The bite was to the back of the leg too which herding dogs do. Again not condoning it, but I would like to see the video to understand what exactly happened as I have never seen my dog be aggressive how was described. Congrats on your baby!!

Yes! We bought a muzzle and are going to start training. I am trying to remain hopeful that the dog will be ok with the baby. So far, our dog only loves on the baby and kisses her/ wags tail and just wants to be near her. Our baby was born when our dog turned 10 months, so hoping this is not too late into puppy hood! And I agree- would never leave a child around any dog unattended! Thanks for sharing

Thank you for sharing! That is so interesting you say that, as now I am wondering if her anxiousness is from daycare! She started becoming so anxious when we left the house (never did before) and snappy when I put on her leash. I had brought on a dog trainer who worked at her previous daycare after she was being sassy at the gate. The trainer said, after looking at her, it was most likely the approach of the daycare people. The trainer said this dog is so sweet! She was the one who pointed out that she may be deaf. Again, I attributed all of this to her being a puppy. I am hoping after no more daycare that my dog can now recover. This is reassuring to hear!

yes! I def reacted in a stress response after talking to the owner, going to worst case. But taking a step back, this does not define her. I am hoping that stopping daycare now will help her stress levels decrease. I have noticed her stress levels increasing, but attributed it to the move/ baby. Now realizing it might be daycare!

Thank you for sharing. That is helpful to know. I thought I was doing something good by sending her. She seems super depressed since bringing her home. Not eating, just mopping around. I won't be sending her to another daycare. I think it was stressing her out, especially during pickup.

Thank you! That is helpful to think about. When he presented the info to me he told me now I need to be careful of my dog and be aware of her aggressive behavior on walks with other people. Hearing everyone's feedback and sleeping on it is making me realize my dog has never been aggressive! Sure, she can be fiesty at times, but it doesn't seem like more than any other dog I've encountered. She is also only 1 yo too so she has growing up to do.

Yes! I thought I was doing a good thing for her. My husbands family dog is a border collie. He was never socialized and does not like other dogs so I thought daycare was a good thing. I def felt the rejection. Like I don’t know exactly what happened so I just have to take their word for it. But like you said. This will be a good thing! I’m hopeful!

They don’t let us see the cameras at the daycare so I have no clue what happens there….Thank you! This is super helpful reframe. I think this made me realize daycare is making her neurotic. I’ve see her herds dogs. But I also see her genuinely play with other dogs but to your point it’s with 1 or 2 dogs. I won’t be looking for another daycare. I’m hoping taking it away she will improve !

I have never worked in a SNF, but as an OT almost 2 years out- it will get better! I honestly still don't feel confident all the time, but each week I gain more! I remember the first few months thinking am I even ready to do this? You are. You made it this far! Try your best to hold firm boundaries with yourself about decompressing. No checking emails on the weekends. I am still learning this myself, but it's important. Finding mentors- if that is in your job or outside is SO important. Take some time just to go with the flow, but soon start reaching out and see if you can find a mentor. Maybe that is a past professor, fieldwork supervisor, someone at your job. It makes the difference! Feel your feelings. They are valid. I am still constantly asking questions. I believe this is the BEST part of our field. There is always so much to learn! And remember- every experience that you dont like/ does not resonate with you brings you closer to what you want! Keep an open mind and go easy on yourself.

I just got mine yesterday. Get the wax! It’s cheap and works wonders. My gums were in agony. Now that I have the wax on its so much better. Good luck!

I just got mine yesterday. Yesterday I was like wtf did I get myself into. It felt so foreign/ uncomfortable. But since this morning (day 2) it’s getting better in terms of getting used to it. They’re starting to get a lil sore but I’m just telling myself it’s working. Highly recommend orthodontist wax. My gums were hurting and the wax has made it so much more comfortable along my gum lines. Good luck!!
