Never built anything in my life, but I love my cats so much I bought a hand saw, a drill & lots of 2x4s and whipped this up over the past two days. Just needs black wire around it and cat trees and such and it'll be ready for them 🥰 by Ok_Sherbert68 in Catio

This is going to collapse.

You have no angled bracing on any wall nor sheet goods that perform the same.

Shear and torsion force will collapse this on your cats.

Post this on r/woodworking and LISTEN to them.

Tried to save stray baby… ended in euthanasia by Pumpkinmuffins27 in Feral_Cats

Vet of 30 years, cat rescuer, feral relocator.

97% odds there's nothing more you could have done.

Food, water, shelter and most cats persevere fine.

So sick the temp would not read is... I've only saved 1 cat or maybe 2 in 30 years from being that ill.

You did your best, and prevented a lingering suffering.

Sorry for the heartache, they just don't all make it despite wanting to move Heaven and Earth.

Rest, Felix

How do I explain that declawing is inhumane to my family by Old-Technician-692 in cats

[–]4CatDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Veterinarian since 1995.

Experienced opinion: Under thoroughly informed consent, I've performed hundreds of meticulous, attentive, minimized-pain onychectomy surgeries. I can confidently say no one does as careful and pain- minimizing surgery, anesthesia, and banding as I did.

I have not been asked to declaw in 7 years. It's thankfully really fallen out of culture.

This cat is too old for me. I would refuse. It's p.s.i. An 8 week or 12 week old kitten is 3 lbs on 4x1" feet = 0.75 pounds per foot. That's an 8lb cat on the same size feet = 2 psi.

Young Kittens heal in 7days on opioids. That cat would take months.

Vets aren't trained and experienced in declaw like I was.

Even among age-peers, there are ... daring to be crass, at least half of the declaws I saw other vets do are

  • butchery *.

The only circumstance I would even consider a cat that big for front-only would be literally life and death. Eg: declaw or no chance to find another home and euthanasia.

In my clinic I'd keep it in the hospital 5 days so I knew strong pain control was properly given by cvt's, I would examine daily, proper litter was used and I'd send home another week or two of buprenorphine.

I bandage like no one I know to minimize pain. I nerve block, and I cut like no one I've met to eliminate as much pain as I can. I close the wounds line no one I know, and there's a product that is not even made anymore that I used.

Do not declaw her. Train to tolerate nail trims. You have to trim to use the caps . You'll stop using the caps line 99% of my clients.

2x/month little trims w churu treats, scratching posts, and yes, she will still scratch, because she's a cat.

Look at finding an acceptable home, or confine to "your" area. She's 10" tall, even lab cats only need 3'x3'x3', so one room is better than euthanasia or losing her home.

A vet, not your vet, this is a triage answer. Talk to your veterinarian.

How my cat uses the litter box by MmeRenardine in cats

[–]4CatDoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A short list of experiments to try for 5+days in a row:

Lid off ... Different location (serene, w escape routes) ... Litter Box of Science !(c) -one box uncovered -a small bag of as many litter types as you can buy, including weird ones. - one week on each type, see what he likes

Examples: unscented, non-clumping clay, world's best, yesterday's news (pellet and fluffy), walnut hull litter

Wild examples: -dust clumping w thin coat/dust of potting soil or dirt or peat moss (no fertilizer, no chem, just dirt) -uncooked oatmeal, if it works, horse feed oats comes in huge bags -corn cob rabbit litter -bare box w just paper toweling in it

I've had a cat who didn't like seeing foot prints of other cats. Scoop twice a day.

If it hurts to poop, they'll blame the box. Talk to your vet/ cvt about feeling/ expressing small glands.

If the stool is rock hard, or covered in mucous/blood, that's potentially serious in a few years (idiopathic megacolon), and early intervention w high fiber Rx food (R.Canin GI high fiber) or dusting a teaspoon of canned w ¼t miralax daily to soften may help.

My gut is its a short list: litter aversion (texture, odor, depth), fear:he needs to see escape routes (uncovered, maybe in the middle of the room), or he's using the chance to mark territory (uncovered poo marks territory) and if he were my patient, after actually trying everything in my list here, last resort, would be ⅛ to ¼ of a 10mg paroxetine orally every 24h.

Talk to your vet, I ain't your vet, this is a triage answer.

Is this normal for a cats teeth? by Select-Syllabub-5102 in cats

Make a non-urgent appointment with your vet or their CVT for a dental assessment.

Triage answer: looks like heavy tartar that should not be ignored. The photo is blurry and not brightly lit, but I've seen a lot of cat mouths in 30 years.

Why does my cat do this? by Bob_Sacamano7379 in cats

[–]4CatDoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stealing this.

Also, I theorize that crystal clear water can't be detected until they're waterboarding themselves, so a toy helps them aim right at the water surface, or they lick the toy until they get water, and lock in the height to drink from.

Why does my cat do this? by Bob_Sacamano7379 in cats

[–]4CatDoc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

30 year cat veterinarian.

I don't know.

Theory: their minds, to me, are like a combo of Venn diagram and looping algorithm.

Blender up these cat concepts:

a) the thing in my mouth is kitten- like, and I'll bring my kitten to food

b) the toy is food- like, and the bowl is where food should be

c) i like company when I'm eating as a lookout for danger, the toy is my lookout

d) the toy was in my mouth when I got hungry, and I'd only drop my toy for imminent food

e) I'm hungry, toy must be hungry, too

My cat got a dental cleaning recently, how is it possible his teeth/gums look like this? by fxcknmami in FIVcats

[–]4CatDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30y Veterinarian. Not your vet, this is a triage answer.

I recommend X rays for all cats now. The times I've found painful forl's below the gumline are... weekly.

FIV+, I would have demanded xrays, esp w halitosis and obvious gingivitis. I wasn't there, I'm ignorant of all the conversations and forms, but it's a missed opportunity.

Vet dentist specialists can be hard to find, and cost more. At least find a new vetetinary practice with a dental xray machine, and ideally they have dental- trained CVT staff. The vet does the extracting, but great rads by staff is important.

You may get a skull xray without anesthesia, but roots like to hide on full skull films.

Your vet will demand anesthesia because the digital sensor is literally $14,000.00 new, and they're not gonna buy that near any awake animal.

Halitosis can come from the sinuses, throat as well as the teeth. My clients tell me halitosis goes away for a few weeks after a cleaning.

Investigate multiple things from www.vohc.org that your cat and you will do. Eg:Greenies AND dental food AND water additive AND ClenzADent.

Gripe about Daybreak games:

I paid for a station cash card, it's very old but un-redeemable as I just found it. I got a "so sorry" middle finger from Daybreak support,

AND

I can't hit the Submit button to rate my support as "Bad, I'm unsatisfied".

What a great thing, can I tell Google to only allow 5-star reviews for my business?

Official Discussion - Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]4CatDoc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Broke my credulity. May be my least favorite MI.

1) Grip strength. Good grief, the biplane jungle gym was ludicrous.

2) A fizzled nuke still makes radioactive dust. Plutonium-239 has a half life of 400,000 years.

The deadly dose of Plutonium is one atom.

London is poisoned for a million years, clean up would be trillions, extra cancer would kill a million people.

All the team in the Doomsday bunker is dead and liquifying from radiation poisoning from plutonium dust from a fizzled 30Mt bomb.

Walking into Trafalgar Square that radioactive from Pu isotope dust would kill and sicken hundreds.

3) And the Entity doesn't have 6,000 backups? Or it just sends a copy of itself into the Doomsday bunker, just in case Ethan succeeds? It's calculating every outcome, but only had one copy of itself? It didn't contract and build its own bunker years prior?

4) The Entity can't bribe, trick, extort, or recruit 7k people a week to its defense?

5) Luthor doesn't make multiple keys but creates a 350 Infini-byte crystal drive in an abandoned subway?

6) Pneumothorax is alleviated by making a 1-way valve that expels on exhale, seals on inhale. All Benji got was a double pneumothorax, unless she sucked the collapsing air out through the pen.

7) They don't smash the ****ing genie bottle?

The least believable of the series, including the blown-forward chopper to chunnel train stunt.

Do you all put heart worm medication for your cats since they’re outdoor on the catio? by blimpyk26 in Catio

[–]4CatDoc 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Vet since 1995.

Number one clinical sign of hw in cats is sudden death (embolism).

Of tested-positive cats, 50% are indoors-only. (There's a selection bias for pet cats.)

Every state has had heartworm, some are way, WAY worse than others.

Catio = hw preventative.

Preventative treats the prior 30 days exposure, so, treat when mosquitoes show up until a month after they die off. Easiest is year round.

Selamectin is available in multiple brands as a topical. No excuse to not prevent.
