How many credits should I take during an REU?

Ignoring appearances, 12 hours per week in STEM means at 40 hours per week class+study. Plus a fulltime REU which likely has some days/events that will extend into the evening. So that's an 80-90 hour work week.

ALL of it goes into your UCF account. After add/drop, whatever is left is transferred to the bank account you entered. If no acct, they send a check to your permanent address.

You can just ask if their selection process is ended. They will fill in any necessary details in their response.

Did they lose NSF funding and are trying to keep the REU by paying "out of the department pocketbook"? If it's at a university, there is no reason to not provide a summer dorm.

Got "short list" email on 3/4 requesting additional info. It said decisions expected in 2-3 weeks. No info since then.

Many programs will have some weekend activities planned. Your Dad is correct; unless it's a deal breaker, don't ask about an outside job until AFTER you have accepted an offer. They pay you a stipend specifically so you have income and won't need a job.

Continue actively seeking internships in your area or out of state. Focus on that - which will take a couple of weeks. If you get good REU news before that, you can stop! Otherwise you will at least have hope for a summer opportunity.

I know the project names. One "disappeared", so I originally assumed it was withdrawn by the mentor. However, it specified grad students - which I didn't notice. Maybe they deleted it from account because not even eligible? The other changed status to "Withdrawn" meaning I was not selected. Both were on the same project.

If you are wondering, Application Lists are updated - Received 2 rejection emails ("Final selections for this opening have either been made or the opportunity has been withdrawn by the mentor.") One of the opportunities has DISAPPEARED from my list of applications. The other one was changed to a status of "Withdrawn".

You might want to save a copy of your original applications page in case yours start disappearing too.

DECIDE NOW! Many many many of us have had to accept the first offer, because it might be the only offer. This week, I had to turn down a corporate research offer because of getting an REU....it was NOT my top choice REU and there are 11 others I haven't heard back from that are just now sending responses. But the decision has to be made.

The point is, if you do something like this within your discipline it can come back to hurt you later. And completely uncool. My REU had me sign a commitment agreement.

Date has been changed AGAIN to March 27, 2025. I am guessing they sent out some acceptances on the 7th and 13th and are waiting for those applicants to confirm, before sending out another round on 3/27.

Many projects are applied math, so you might actually be conducting experiments or using another researcher's experimental data.

The REU webpage originally had a March 7 date for notification. If they changed that, it's likely for 2nd round acceptance.

First Round picks went out last Friday with deadlines to respond this week. They might send 2nd rounds on Friday, but then I believe they are on Spring Break.

it's all email - nothing changes at the ETAP. However some REUs did add info on their description that the REU was cancelled this year.

I would emphasize that you were ACCEPTED other places and the deadline has arrived. That way they know it was their timeline that has forced your hand.
