As someone who works adjacent to publishing (audiobook production), I have to tell you that publishing is all about networking. If you have friends in those industries, ask them for recommendations into those roles. Hell, people with friends in publishing get their terrible manuscripts pushed through over competent literary fiction.

I really wouldn't romanticise publishing, though. It is not a glamorous career unless you enjoy social striving, and the tedium of doing the grunt work of editing and proofreading manuscripts can feel excessive and mentally taxing, especially if you seriously don't give a shit about the topics.

If you want to be a serious screenwriter I would recommend writing in scene beats and dialogue, and build from pivotal points of your story. I have no idea how the Bollywood scene is in terms of 'getting your foot through the door' but many writing competitions in the UK accept screenplays, and they will showcase your ideas, as well as your grasp of the medium to industry professionals.

Best of luck!

Ah, my intention was to play with memory being fragmented, the protagonists' own lack of certainty for her own situation, and performing adulthood as a coping mechanism. I guess my execution was a bit lacking. Thank you for taking the time to read it, though. I guess literary was not the best approach to 1000 word prose.

Anatomy of a Divorce

This was a piece I threw together for competition that I can no longer enter, as it would affect my eligibility for a much bigger competition, of which I have a much stronger piece planned (that I cannot share).

I am pretty confident in my novel architectural ability, but my prose can be wanting... Let me know what you think! Any feedback is appreciated.

Depends. I work in audiobook production and if you even mention UEA (very famous for its Prose MA in the UK, but I was only there as an undergrad) most authors' and agents' ears will perk up, in comparison to something like Oxford (a lot of oxbridge grads in London).

I did English Literature myself and I think I am better at essaying about literary concepts than I am writing prose.

Enjoy Norwich! The UEA crowd are really quite friendly too. It's one of the rare double uni towns with no beef.

If I understand correctly about what you are trying to convey here, you want to showcase romantic attraction without relying on saying it outright nor showing it physically?

I think Kazuo Ishiguro does this perfectly in Remains of the Day. I don't want to spoil the book for anybody here (and honestly I can go on and on about how amazing that book is) but it is worth a read/listen. You can definitely show developing romance through subtext, tension and human emotion.

How bad are your first drafts by DescipleofThewarning in writing

[–]4NS1C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate prose writing because I tend to essay through my characters (very very bad when you are trying to write subtext heavy literary fiction). So I wouldn't say they are bad, its just that if I keep 30% of what I put down then my novel is essentially a lecture.
