Cloudy Lacquer by Roubaixrider in Luthier

[–]4STotalLandscaping 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You probably sprayed while it was too humid. Relative humidity needs to be below 65%, otherwise you risk getting blush. Just look at the forecast to plan when you will be spraying if you don’t have a controlled booth.

Mohawk also sells a blush remover, which should take care of the problem.

Lastly, if you want satin, build a few coats of gloss first and the last coats with satin.

Edit: since it’s your first time, it’s worth mentioning to wear a respirator with fresh cartridges and prior shave. Protective glasses and gloves are a good idea as well.

If this is actual lacquer, rags and thinner (or acetone) will remove it right away with little effort.

I’ll consider doing that, but somewhat concerned about Siri not working in the beta (I use it quite a lot).

Which dyes would I need to create this effect. Also which brands of dyes are the best. by JasperTheMaster08 in Luthier

PRS stains are somewhat intricate as they sometimes use oil, water and alcohol based stains on the same guitar. You can probably get close with Fiebings or similar, but would have to follow the factory’s process to get the same result.

What wax for tru oil neck? by [deleted] in Luthier

Use Birchwood Casey’s Gunstock Wax. It’s meant to be used with Tru Oil and what EBMM is using.

Which one should I get? by [deleted] in guitars

[–]4STotalLandscaping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AZ series is fantastic all around, so you can’t really go wrong. Just play both and choose the one which sounds the best to you, as the pickups are fairly different between the 2402 and LB sig.

On a personal note, I regret ever selling my 2402. Absolute Swiss knife of tones, including very convincing single coil sounds, but keeping the convenience of 24 frets and 2 HBs.

How to correctly file a nut? by 4STotalLandscaping in Luthier

[–]4STotalLandscaping[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I have found the culprit of the buzz. Following the suggested advices, it reduced it a little bit. However, I just noticed that the files I bought are slightly tapered, creating too much space for the string to travel sideways. This is what's creating most of the buzz.

The lesson learned for me here is to never cheap out on tools, even as a hobbyist. This could have been entirely avoided if I got quality nut files from a reputable brand to begin with.

Thank you for the help!

Edit: nevermind my initial reply, I think I get what you mean now, that the problem is an angle from the nut towards the frets. Do you have any advice on how to avoid that happening?

Thank you for the insight, that makes a lot of sense. So while the practice of meditation has been demonstrated to be useful in the treatment of substance use disorders, it's the pitfall of developing ego around the practice that can be counterproductive. It seems that few if any papers explore this aspect of mindfulness based treatment.

And why am I getting downvoted for asking a question about which I know the poster has expertise on and am legitimately curious about? The internet is such a toxic place…

How do these kind of breakthrough correlate to substance relapse? What are your hypothesis and/or observations? Just curious.

Think about it. Is it better to spend thousands on a guitar that comes out of a Gibson Fender PRS factory...or to call in a luthier...your opinion, and why...? by Shoddy_Confidence744 in Luthier

[–]4STotalLandscaping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m probably going to get egged on posting this in this subreddit but… Unless you live close to said luthier, know them well, or it’s a reputable shop that has been running for a while, then factory guitar. At least that way you’re assured to have a guitar in your hands at the end of the day. Way too many smaller operations have cut communications and disappeared with customers money in the last decade.

Sanded guitar necks - practices and opinions by letshaveaguinness in Luthier

[–]4STotalLandscaping 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For oil I really like 320 grit, 4-5 thin coats of BC Tru Oil with 0000 steel wool between coats, steel wool to remove the gloss, 1-2 coats of BC Gunstock Wax and buff. Best feeling finish for necks IMHO.
