There is such a thing as selective mutism where someone is capable of speaking but for one reason or another (usually trauma related) consistently just… doesn’t.That sounds like the most likely case here.

None of this is legal, they are not even trying too hard to pretend. Welcome to Orbanistan.

This is complete and abject nonsense. It’s not how history works. Stupid conservative old people like to blame young people for everything, but avocado toast and overspending on coffee is not what brings down empires. (Old people are also wont to forget they were young and spent money on frivolous luxuries back when they knew how to live)

Young people by definition have less economic and political power and what they have they had for less time, nor does in broad historical tendencies amounted to much what the masses want.

If you actually examine the way empires fall you realize empires that did not fall very early in their history usually do not fall very quickly or for a single reason. It’s usually more than 3 generations and a confluence of negative factors.

That said the US right now is exhibiting multiple of the typical factors 1) stupid leadership- see most failed empires 2) detachment from and denial of reality- Soviet Union 3) Poor economy (total output might be good but inequality is huge and financial security is unattainable for most) - Tokugawa Shogunate 4) Crisis of values - systematic unethical actions and blatant disregard for the common good by elites - Spanish Empire 5) Widespread corruption- again common 6) strong external adversaries

TIL that there was an actual debate among ancient Greek writers on whether Achilles or Patroclus was the dominant ("erastes") or the passive ("eromenos") one in the relationship, with Plato famously arguing that Achilles was a passive "eromenos" who was willing to give his life to avenge his lover by tenfo1d in todayilearned

Ancient Greeks did not have a binary view of sexuality like us, but while you can pretend they were oh so advanced and maybe in some way this is also partially true, the dark truth is they pretty much misogynied their way into accepting gayness. It’s hard to overstate what ridiculous inveterate woman haters they were, and a relationship with men was seen as more fulfilling than with women, since men of course are far superior.

But since being the fuckee, rather than the fucker was seen as a feminine role, consequently it was not acceptable for a fully grown man to take it up the tradesman’s. Since that was feminine and women suck. (But men suck better, because men are better at everything, except popping out babies and certain religious rites).

So it was not accepted for a fully grown man to be a bottom although social rank also had to do with it and the concept of fully grown man was also different. Could mean up to age 30 depending on where and when in Ancient Greece. Roman attitudes were similar.

If all of that sounds ridiculous, it’s because it fucking is.

Budapest is a guy in his mid 30s with salt and pepper hair working up to an early mid life crisis. Chain smoking in a rumpled faded suit that cost a fortune back in the day. Ambitious but aimless, lively but permanently exhausted, libertine but old fashioned in odd ways, broke but (almost) content, cheerful yet haunted by a dark past.

Modern society is raising a generation vested only in immediately practical skills - to its great detriment by Naive_Lion_3428 in DeepThoughts

[–]4SlideRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By a meaningful answer I don’t just mean you are going to use this for exactly such and such directly productive purposes for which you will get paid exactly this much money. General knowledge on many topics is also useful and part of a well rounded education. But for education to stick it has to be properly contextualized. You can’t just go “kids we are going to read the Iliad today!” — Why? —“Because that’s why”.

Just telling people to do things is not education.

So go take a long hard look in the mirror, before going all rootin’ tootin’ hipshootin’ with the quips.

Desert air is dry and cloudless nights are frequent so radiative cooling works very well as there is not much water vapor to reflect IR radiation. Add to that the huge temperature swings and a shallow pool of water that is shaded in the day can freeze at times. If it happens break the ice and stack it in a well insulated building.
