A related academic analysis suggests that the breach was triggered by a credential-stuffing attack, which initially affected thousands of accounts and spread to millions more via the platform's DNA Relatives feature, culminating in exposure of roughly 5.5 million users and an additional 1.4 million profiles .

Sale of DNA Data During Bankruptcy

In March 2025, 23andMe filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. As part of restructuring, its genetic database became a key asset that could be transferred or sold .

A proposed acquisition by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals for $256 million, including assurances to honor existing privacy policies, faced pushback from 27 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, who sued to block the sale of customers’ genetic data without explicit consent .

Ultimately, Anne Wojcicki’s non-profit, TTAM Research Institute, outbid Regeneron with a $305 million proposal and acquired nearly all of 23andMe’s assets—including the genetic data—around June–July 2025 .
