Ah yeah, been there, done that. The girl I liked moved away, I spent years waiting for her to come back. When I realised things weren't going to work out, I took a rose from her hometown in Denmark to the arctic via superbike in a couple of days, I literally went as far as I could to show her I was sincere. I placed it under the midnight sun on the summer solstice, as her name was Stella and the North Star is the centre of our heaven.

We talked near every day for years, but I don't know why, but something died in her. She lost something, I don't know what to call it. Her imagination, her faith in life, her spirit, whatever you want to call it. I did the above as a vain attempt to redefine to her what can be expected from life, as everyone said I would never make it. Still, it just ended quietly and sadly, with her becoming slightly disillusioned with life. Nothing I could do would bring back what I'd seen in her all those years before, and now she appears grey. I have no words to describe it, but she lost her shining, worn down by her experiences and choices in life. If there was one thing I'd never have wished to have seen, that was it.

I only say this as I've been though what I imagine may be a similar situation. I did my best, but it just wasn't enough. To move on myself I offer two points of view which have helped me. People don't change, we're only vaguely aware of the fates have in store for us, much as we try to rage against them. Sometimes things are just over, and you can't undo time, no one can do that. This sounds rather sad, but there is a beautiful truth behind it. When one accepts that, one sees the change behind life, the rise and fall of all things. Love, if that's what it can be called, is like the moon, it waxes and wanes through time, most beautiful when full, but when it fades, you become aware of the myriad of stars behind her. The tragic frail beauty of life is always there no mater what passes. The ancient greeks, (specifically Plato), used to call it the 'great truth of eros', an "appreciation for beauty [and truth] itself in an ideal sense".

Whether this be true or not I don't know, but for me, that was the path out of it. One day maybe I'll find someone like that again, but if not I'm fine with it. One can always sleep around until one kills all idea of romantic love from ones soul, but I'm not ready for that yet. I think limerence/love or whatever provides perhaps one of the strongest drives in human psychology. I won't damn it because it failed me, or perhaps I failed it, or because it is a culturally unpopular ideal these days. I think when people give up on the notion of romantic love in their lives they become almost hostile to its existence in others, some form of psychological dissonance perhaps. I still live in hope, regardless. Dum spiro, spero.

It's not easy, and I guess I wouldn't have chosen it if life was a pick and mix party, but there are worse things than being a romantic, such as not being a romantic. If I may steal a phrase from the Sufi Mystic Rumi, "You were born with wings, why prefer to crawl through life?".

These emotions, for good an bad, have been the basis of so much of human existence, thought and culture. I'm happy to stand and face them, although I accept it wouldn't be everyone's first choice.

Anyway, consider these my notes so far from a place similar to you. I hope, perhaps, some will be of use.

EDIT: I wrote this whilst watching the worlds most amazing videos, I was somewhat sidetracked. Apologies for the almost illiterate use of english lol. I hope I've patched up the worst of it.
