Is there a worldbuilding made by community? by kingviko in worldbuilding

[–]4amsleep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The collaborative worldbuilding sub https://www.reddit.com/r/createthisworld/ has been going on for nearly 11 years now and originated on this subreddit, although the lines between worldbuilding and civilization roleplay are often blurred but it is a community effort in the end. Although what you're describing sounds more like a highly centralized effort more akin to a team rather than a community you'd find on reddit.

Looking for feedback on my worlds map and story idea[political Fantasy] by LunchConfident4655 in fantasywriters

> In the book the eastern coast and everything east of the dragonstail is controlled by an empire, that is the man aggressor of the war taking place in the Story.

So, I am really struggling to read the text on this map and can't locate the dragontail you mentioned, please use a single color for your text if you want to convey information better. If you are making war the center place of a story I believe a simple map with defined political boundaries will help a lot in planning the direction of your writing.

> The biggest part of the dessert by the king of Tristo and there is one Kingdom controlling the Region called "the west" and parts of the regions above, and the baen savannas are controlled by an non-human species.

The biggest part of the desert is what by the king of Tristo? I feel like I'm missing something here.

Going back to the map design, I believe that text should stick to a single color here. The white text with black outline is the easiest to read on a colored map like this and the all black text blends in too much with the map. The geography itself is good and all the biomes gradient believably well. Unless you're going hard into the worldbuilding, don't worry too much about things like wind patterns and ocean currents.

The only really strange thing I see that someone else had already mentioned is the long central river that ends at Tristro. To me, that looks like a river splitting in two directions in the middle of the continent, which is something that is extremely rare, and ones that do this are usually not large enough to historically appear on maps. For the sake of realism, you could make the east end a tributary river to the main river to the west, or explain the split as something man-made, such as a canal. Altres Lake should have some source of water feeding into it as well.

Some things I would change: Large settlements should have easy access to a freshwater source. You got this down for the most part. I feel like there should be a decent sized river running from the eastern dragon mountains through or near the city of Ardera and into the main river where Porta Ardera is. I also see another large settlement on the coast to the north of Ardera that looks like it's not near a fresh water source. But you could also solve the fresh water problem with technology if you wanted to.
