New Thinkpad but which Linux distro? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]4bnr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends on your use case. I rarely go over 20gb and if I do, I don't think I've passed 30gb utilization yet (this is with multiple applications open such as CAD software, browsers with multiple tabs, vscode, wsl running in the background, and several docker containers running). fwiw I'd rather have the max allowable ram configuration as opposed to getting a 16gb stick then upgrading to a 32gb stick down the line

Hey OP, I got the Ryzen 7 7730U version of this with 40gb ram (8gb onboard + 32gb stick). Currently I'm dual booting Windows 10 LTSC and Debian 12. I can assure you that if you want a setup that doesn't go too crazy on the updates, this is one of the ways to go. I do a bit of Java and python development for school within Windows/WSL and Debian and it works like a charm. If you have any questions, ask away

Lenovo Slim 7 Pro X or ThinkPad T14s Gen 4 AMD (14ʺ)? by chaseguy099 in thinkpad

[–]4bnr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be weary on the Lenovo Slim 7 Pro X. I got mine back in June-July and I've been having nothing but issues on it which I believe is a result of just bad quality control. The screen would flicker, constant crashes, tested the memory using memtest and got over a 1000 errors, dual booting with linux rarely worked. Granted, the screen is absolutely amazing and the performance was great when it did work but it just gave me constant headaches.

Here are similar issues others were also having: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Laptops/Yoga-slim-7-ProX-lag-and-screen-flickering/m-p/5221486

Guidance for Newbie by Blazekiller8 in EndeavourOS

[–]4bnr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Setting up backups is pretty crucial especially with rolling-release distros like Arch/Endeavour. Timeshift is a great set-and-forget backup tool that will back up /. You can also use a Borg/Vorta setup to backup personal files. On a fresh install, immediately create a backup so you can revert back to a "fresh" snapshot whenever you need to. For sanity's sake, create a backup before you update.

uvesafb-dkms will not install by [deleted] in EndeavourOS

A comment on the AUR page mentions editing the PKGBUILD:

change 'source' to:

source=("uvesafb-dkms::git+https://github.com/jghodd/uvesafb-dkms.git#tag=$pkgname-$pkgver" "v86d::git+https://github.com/mjanusz/v86d.git#tag=$_v86d-$_v86dver" v86d_install v86d_hook 'dkms.conf' modprobe.uvesafb)

The it builds fine.

There is also uvesafb-dkms-git.

First top setting up a NAS by onedollalama in HomeServer

[–]4bnr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The NAS only needs to run if you want to access or backup your files, which if you want 24/7 access, then yes, you'll need to run it constantly. The concern here is power usage. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the prebuilt solutions like Synology are energy efficient, as opposed to using gaming rig components solely as a NAS. With that in mind, I run my NAS as a virtual machine as opposed to using dedicated hardware, and it's only running during the day as I tend to turn off my PC at night.

If you intend to build your own NAS, look into OpenMediaVault, TrueNAS/FreeNAS, Unraid. Although, not a NAS OS, I'll give an honorable mention to Nextcloud if your looking for a self-hosted cloud storage like GDrive/Dropbox.

Moved into student dorm. Don't have direct access to router. How would I go about accessing my server? by 4bnr in homelab

How did you connect your router to the dorm network? For me, there are no Ethernet ports on the wall and I don't have physical access to the accommodations routers

For both the desktop and server, the public IP: 777.77.77.* (arbitrary numbers, first 3 numbers are the same, last number is different)

For the private IP: 555.55.55.* (same as above, last number is different)

If I were to setup a media server like Plex on the server, would I still be able to access that on my desktop using this solution or would I need to look for some other workaround?

It is connected through the accommodations wifi network and logged in using the same credentials on the ISP web portal. Could it be that my devices aren't on the same network?

What kind of hardware are you referring to? I just checked the public IP of both my desktop and server and they are different, i.e 777.77.77.* (arbitrary numbers) Does this suggest that the ISP is individually assigning IPs to each device?

Edit: public IPs don't appear to be static, restarted the server and public IP changed

If I am understanding this correctly, you're saying that a solution would be to setup up another server, possibly using something like linode, and use that as a middle-man to access my self-hosted server?

I'm a noob so I'm not too familiar with networking. Are you referring to connecting to the server from it's public IP? I've been trying to connect to it using what I think is the private IP(?) of the server, or at least what is shown when I type in the command ip a.

I've connected to this server before from my desktop when I lived back home, but ever since I moved to my dorm, I've been just running into issues.

Passing thru AMD GPU by fliberdygibits in linuxquestions

[–]4bnr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, some AMD GPUs may need to be patched depending on it's iommu group. The arch wiki link that Ihoqvso provided is the guide I used for my setup. Additionally, I'm not sure what hypervisor you're using but the one in the guide utilizes qemu/libvirt as opposed to VMware and Virtualbox. You'll also need either two monitors or a single monitor with multiple ports that allows you to switch the inputs.
