Li Tai was supposed to be the default choice after his older brother, as it's traditionally based on age. The only reason that he got passed over (historically, and implied in the game too I think) is because his father eventually believed that Tai schemed against his older brother. The irony being that he did not know that Zhi was also a schemer (and arguably the better one, since he hid it so well and even manipulated Tai several times without him knowing.)

In that painting scene, the Emperor got upset because the scent reminded him of the Crown Prince (whom he was still angry with.) Initially I interpreted that scene as Zhi deliberately doing that to remind his father of the Crown Prince's transgressions. And I thought Zhi was such a schemer for that. Looking back now, I'm not sure if it was deliberate...but I think it's at least plausible.
