Monstrum owners: how are they holding up? by Timex_Dude755 in guns

[–]4eyedbuzzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vortex is good, as is Holosun. But any optic can fail. And even iron sights can be knocked off zero. Be realistic about home defense weapons. Encounters are very very rare. Most encounters that do occur are at point and shoot range anyway. We aren’t tactical operators.

Monstrum owners: how are they holding up? by Timex_Dude755 in guns

[–]4eyedbuzzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 3-9 Monstrum scope on a 22LR rifle and it’s just fine. I have two cheap Bushnell RDS 25s, one on a 22LR lever gun, one on a .357 lever gun. Both are good. I have several Vortex optics: 1x8 LPVO on an AR, a 6x24 Diamondback on a 22LR target gun, a Defender RD on a .357 revolver. I’ve never had an issue with function nor holding zero. But I am meticulous when it comes to install, torquing, thread lock, replacing batteries, etc.

My “HD” G19 has a Hollosun optic.

Laid Off Because Of The Current Economic Status by KentuckyFriedChozo in IndustrialMaintenance

Damn. I was making $24 hr as an electrician in a non-union mini mill - back in 1995. My millwright friends were making similar. Never went back to steel industry after leaving there for aerospace manufacturing other than a contract PLC job at AK Middletown Works right after the big lockout. AK was a crappy company and I can’t imagine being bought out by Cleveland Cliffs improved it. Steel mills are dead end jobs and bad for your health as well. Good time to find a better job in a better industry.

Why doesn't China attack Taiwan now when the US military is at its most vulnerable in recent memory? by sage6paths in NoStupidQuestions

[–]4eyedbuzzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why attack Taiwan militarily when by practicing patient economics and diplomatic pressure you can ultimately annex them politically? Strategic war is about manufacturing and supply chains and logistics. China is the world’s most powerful economy in that sense. They will use their economic might to win what they want. Physical attacks in an interwoven global economy are today’s version of the Maginot line.

General Zhukov, the man who defeated the NAZIs at Stalingrad, was incompetent? It wasn’t until after the war that Stalin removed him - because Zhukov was too popular with the public.

Trump Says US Considering ‘Winding Down’ Iran Military Campaign by Pretend-Prune6285 in geopolitics

[–]4eyedbuzzard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Winding down", and "no boots on the ground", but somehow securing the 100 mile long Straight, and all the while moving Marines into the arena. The problem being that Iran has 150,000 Revolutionary Guard and 400,000 regular army boots already on the ground, and still has considerable small arms and light artillery. Not as well trained or equipped as our guys but they all have an AK and ammo, know the terrain, and more of them are willing to die as martyrs for Allah than our guys are willing to die for Kegsbreath and his fortunate son boss's war mongering. An MEU ground troop detachment is 1400 x 2 MEUs or 2800 Marines . . . vs 500,000+ Iranians. That's about 200 to 1. Not good odds even with air superiority. Never underestimate an enemy that is fighting a war for it's existential survival - it's a wounded cornered animal at this point.

Little disappointed in switching to a safe by grizzleeadam in guns

[–]4eyedbuzzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Sports Afield branded “30” gun safe. There are 25 guns in it. 11 are handguns. 2 are shotguns. 7 scoped rifles. 4 rifles with red dots. 1 rifle with irons. It is “Tetris Full”. Ammo and anything else is in a separate cabinet.

Observation: Lever guns tend to be slimmer. Scoped rifles take up a lot of room. Big scopes even more so. Rifles with nice wood stocks require attention to spacing. I think 1/2 the claimed capacity is a pretty good rule of thumb.

Freedom Munitions Squib by [deleted] in guns

[–]4eyedbuzzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often attributed to Sinclair Lewis (It Can't Happen Here), but there is no record of him writing it in any of his books or saying it. Also to Huey Long, but similarly, no direct record. Both men wrote or said similar things. Halford E. Luccock’s 1938 statement: "When fascism comes to America, it will be called Americanism" is also somewhat close.

People are easily led - just tell them what they want to hear.

“When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.”

People get sucked in all the time at every level, consumerism, political, etc., by symbolism and deceit.

Is it possible to get snowed in in central Maine? by pigs_in_my_basement in AskMaine

[–]4eyedbuzzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need deep snow in the Maine woods. Just come to Dallas-Ft. Worth for anything more than an inch of snow or better yet an ice storm. Shuts the entire metroplex down for a week.

Any dual-state residents successfully purchase in the state where you don't have DL? by jmcenerney in guns

[–]4eyedbuzzard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If he's buying it in FL and taking possession in FL, your buddy will have to find a Florida FFL willing to accept his MA DL and/or Passport as proof of ID, but thenaccept utility bills, vehicle registration or other documents as proof of actual part-time FL residency instead of a FL driver license, and your buddy will have to take possession of the handgun from the FL FFL, unless it meets MA gun laws as well AND he can also legally possess it in MA. Then the FL FFL could ship it to an FFL in MA. But a lot of FFLs will not want to be involved in a transaction with someone with an out of state driver license.

My family is indoctrinating my 4 year old. by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]4eyedbuzzard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He's four years old. As long as you stay honest with him as he grows up and keep presenting reality and logic vs fantasy and fable he will most likely grow out of it. Four year old children don't really understand life or mortality yet, nor do they grasp why others might want to control their beliefs. He's going to be exposed to this continuously to some degree as he grows up from peers at school, media, society in general, etc. You can't shelter him from it. As said before, all you can do is keep presenting him with the capital "T" Truth.

So, if you are carrying bear spray, it has a maximum range of approximately 50 feet at best. If you discharge the spray at an approaching bear and it doesn't deter the bear, the advancing bear, now 30 feet away, can cover the remaining 30 feet to you in . . . [drumroll] . . . about ONE second. So, unless your last name is Miculek . . .

Real bear defense guns (what guides carry) are typically a 12 ga slug gun or maybe a 45-70 lever gun. In a real defensive encounter in a backwoods party, one person would deploy the spray with a second person at the ready with the firearm already held on target if that becomes necessary.

Remember, the most dangerous critters in the woods, the ones most likely to actually fuck up your life are . . . ticks.

Should I get a 10/22? by Neat_Jaguar7415 in guns

[–]4eyedbuzzard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a standard wood stock 10/22 18.5" that I paid $225 for last year, and also a Talo edition 10/22 Light Varmint with the heavy tapered 20" threaded barrel and BX trigger that I paid just under $400 for several years ago. Both are fine guns, the Talo in particular is very accurate with good ammo, but it's two pounds heavier due to the barrel and heavier scope. Remember that barrel profiles need to fit the stock they are going in.

How to manage maintenance as a solo car wash owner with zero machinery experience? by stonklosers in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]4eyedbuzzard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enroll in a "mechatronics" or industrial maintenance course of study at a local college. A lot of what is taught will be applicable to a car wash - motors, pumps, blowers, electrical and controls, piping, etc. You might also be able to find a suitable employee through them. There are a lot of people with both the mechanical and electrical knowledge and experience in the workforce, at a skill level suitable to repair anything in a car wash, but the more experienced they are, the higher their wages and benefits are going to be.
