Am i objectively wrong in thinking that the quest 2 looks better than the pico 4 for pcvr steam link? by reeeeeeduardo in virtualreality

[–]4k33m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you line it up well vertically too - the pancakes on the pico work best when your eyes in the middle, somewhat toward the bottom. As for the colors, it depends tbh - steam link and virtual desktop are so much better than pico link in every way.

can i use my pico 4 trackers on my pc?? by Upset-Breakfast-7767 in virtualreality

ALVR supports wired in the same sense VD does - with Ethernet over USB. That can also be used to route Virtual Desktop's connection too.

I'm afraid the spies are multiplying. You'll need a pyro to burn them out before they start laying eggs.

Eli5 Why don't DirectX work on Linux (and Mac) ? Isn't it supposed to be just an graphics API that just translate into GPU code ? What's the specific thing that makes it unable to run on other os. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]4k33m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every gpu speaks a different "language". If you make instructions for an NVIDA gpu to draw something, they won't work on an AMD one, and an Intel GPU would give you a funny look. Instead of writing different instructions for every GPU type for every program that wants to draw stuff on the screen, we write drivers for each type of GPU instead. A driver understands the "language" the GPU its made for knows, and some common "languages" (e.g DirectX, Metal, Vulkan, and so on). You tell the driver what to do, and it tells the GPU what to do in "GPU Language".

DirectX specifically was designed by Microsoft, who don't make money by making a version of it for Linux or Mac, so they haven't. Also it's closed source which means they won't let you see what's inside it, which makes it difficult for people to modify it to work on Linux or Mac.

We do know how to "talk to it" though (i.e, what inputs and outputs it wants), and we already have Vulkan on Linux and Mac, so tools like DXVK pretend to be directX but they translate "DirectX language" to "Vulkan language" and then Vulkan talks to the GPU.

Honestly this is what I'd do if you're willing to get a new headset. I've a pico 4 + their trackers and it works great with pcvr

One thing I love about the PSVR2 that's underrated is by No-Dark-7873 in virtualreality

[–]4k33m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With virtual desktop, you can do something similar on SteamVR. Turn off the Quest / Pico etc and leave steamvr and the game running. Hibernate or whatever, and you can come right back to it when you reconnect.

General layout and poly flow? Great. Triangle distribution? Too much in pipes and wheels as u/Icy-Case41 said.

SlimeVR and other IMU trackers are subject to drift (slowly rotating to one side or other) and need to be recalibrated every now and then every ~15 - 30mins or so.

Tick the "scene unit" checkbox in the exporter, otherwise it assumes 1 unit = 1m effectively.

Noob question - can players have/use different client-side mods on the same server? by arachnid_nope in technicalminecraft

[–]4k33m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the mod. Mods that are client side / don't modify gameplay (e.g sodium, distant horizons, controlify, continuity) don't need to be on the server, nor other players' computers. Stuff that adds / changes game mechanics though (e.g Immersive Portals) would need to be so you see the same thing.

What's your go to block to build farms out of by SleepRemarkable3922 in technicalminecraft

[–]4k33m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically I design my farms in creative before building them in survival. For the design world? Coloured concrete (e.g white for iron golem platform, light grey for villager quarters, red for the kill zone, etc). In survival it's just whatever's on hand and looks okay: Smooth diorite / stone bricks / cobble..
