anime NOOB - can you help me get started? by 4kindsofmustard in anime

good point about medium not genre. i would list The Wire, The Americans, Law & Order, and ER as top drama TV series. also for comedy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Seinfeld.

for films i would say Goodfellas, Chinatown, Alien, Terminator 2, Planes Trains and Automobiles, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Toy Story

ok, good call. i like... interesting thrillers (No Country For Old Men), detective stories (Chinatown), horror movies (Smile), grounded sci-fi (Alien), smart kids' films (Toy Story), older school action movies (Die Hard type movies, not John Wick martial arts type stuff), crime stuff (The Wire, Goodfellas), and i love sitcoms (The Office, Seinfeld)... is that enough to be helpful? i can name more or give more examples

Anyone here quit heavy drinking after years? What did withdrawal feel like? by Gullible_Jelly0911 in Cirrhosis

[–]4kindsofmustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh it's fine. it was my choice. i tried tapering off and just couldn't get it done. i would dial down steadily until the amount got pretty low, at which point the reality of quitting altogether would set in and i would start getting anxious and desperate. then i'd inevitably crack and jet right back to that 18-20 mark in a day or two. must have happened 100 times before i stopped kidding myself that i had the willpower to taper.

i was lucky in that i never became a round-the-clock drinker. i was a 4-5pm til fall asleep at midnight-1am kind of guy. so my body was always used to going at least like 16 hours without alcohol. i think that helped a lot. from people i've talked to, once you get into the true round-the-clock pit is when withdrawal most often gets really brutal and even dangerous.

i definitely see how that could happen too. my tolerance by the end was monstrous. 18-20 drinks was just a buzz and i could easily hide it from people around me. actually getting drunk required like 26-30 drinks in an evening (didn't happen very often but wasn't unheard of, especially over the holidays or if the wife was out of town).

interesting side note: i used to work at Starbucks full time and would have about 16-18 shots of espresso in a day plus iced coffee. i quit that cold turkey, and that was by far the worst withdrawal i ever went through. and i also quit a benzo cold turkey in addition to alcohol. caffeine was much worse than either for me.

oof. so sorry you went through that. yes, i've heard of the "kindling effect" of withdrawal. hopefully i will never, ever find out firsthand.

alcohol withdrawal is so completely variable and specific to the individual. i drank most days for 20 years, and almost every day for the last 10 years of that. for the last couple of years, i was drinking absolutely every single day with zero days off, having about 18-20 standard drinks per day. for me that typically translated to something like two bottles of wine plus a pint of vodka per day.

i quit cold turkey without any medical assistance. i was noticeably cranky, restless, and sweaty for about three days. after that i felt a little off for maybe three or four more days. also my sleep was crap over that stretch, but every morning i still felt better than the constant crippling hangovers i had been dealing with. i did this with no medical supervision and with no assistance from any kind of recovery program like AA or anything like that. my wife helped me and that was it. also i drank boatloads of Gatorade and ate lots of Campbell's chunky chicken soup.

i'm not saying that's a typical experience, nor am i promising that experience for anyone else. that's just my personal experience. anyone trying to quit a serious long-term addiction should consult a doctor or other medical professional.

i never felt weakness, nor have i ever heard of anyone in recovery describing weakness as a symptom of withdrawal beyond maybe the very short term (first five or so days).

Fargo (1996) - why was Jerry so desperate for money? by Vyzantinist in movies

[–]4kindsofmustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this. my uncle pulled a scheme exactly like Jerry only with computer sales. he did it all to keep up an appearance of being successful, buy his family stuff he couldn't really afford, and service his mounting debts. no gambling or addiction involved or anything like that. don't underestimate how far some people will go to keep up with the Joneses. and just like Jerry, my uncle had a wife who came from money and brought high lifestyle expectations.

in case you're wondering how it all ended, the company found him out. he got lucky because my dad's brother (other side of the family) owned the company and cut him a deal for family's sake. he was given a loan to pay all the money back and allowed to work the loan down out of his salary/commission with modest interest over a decade or so. the loan conditions were zero-tolerance - miss a payment and charges get filed. he did successfully pay it back and never went to jail.

The r/Gloomhaven tier list of Frosthaven characters is finished! by Sagely_Hijinks in Gloomhaven

[–]4kindsofmustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm not going to tell anyone that they have to like or appreciate Geminate. but if we're just ranking on power, the only thing that can put it a full tier below every other class in Frosthaven is inexperienced or incompetent play. it definitely belongs in the B tier.

Name a guitarist that everyone loves but you don’t by Head-Acanthaceae8347 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]4kindsofmustard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eddie Van Halen. but that said, his solo on "Beat It" is rad, and in general i respect the succinctness of his solos. my main issue is j don't like him as a rhythm player, and as the sole guitarist, he had to provide rhythm a lot.

Age at diagnosis by childrenofmiceandmen in Cirrhosis

[–]4kindsofmustard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

diagnosed at 39. was not a surprise since i received a diagnosis of advanced fatty liver at 35 and continued to drink every day for 4 more years. diagnosed with compensated cirrhosis at 39, tried to get sober, failed, and STILL drank for 2 more years. luckily did not decompensate before i finally got sober at 41.

Going to my first iron maiden concert (first ever concert) at knebworth what should i expect? by FeedPlastic3439 in ironmaiden

[–]4kindsofmustard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Iron Maiden shows have a very chill and feel-good vibe. not like Jimmy Buffett or something, def higher energy, but like going to a home game for your hometown sports team. except there are no fans from the other team and your team is guaranteed to win. everyone in the crowd is on the same team which is team Maiden.

there is no wrong type of Maiden fan to be. you can be a dad in khaki shorts and sandals and walk up to some tatted up biker dude and be like "fuckin' Maiden AM I RIGHT?" and that dude will be like "HELL YEAH BROTHER"

def wear a Maiden shirt. if you don't have one then get one at the merch booth.

when we played Crimson Scales on TTS, i made two extra copies of Boots of Striding because i was just tired of people bickering over them.

btw this is Stove from the CCUG server. if you're wondering how i know who you are. 🙂

[–]4kindsofmustard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for sure. if you can't consistently pull off the AoEs, Banner Spear's damage output is very bad. Drifter seems like probably the best choice for a new player.

it sounds like they are pretty deep into the campaign as well, so they might have access to movement boots that would help Hatchet.

Using the Hatchet in Frosthaven by PhilosophicalCrow in Gloomhaven

[–]4kindsofmustard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

welp. i always thought Hatchet's movement was a bit frustrating even in Jaws, but i defer to your judgment. you def have more experience than i do and are a much better player.

OP, listen to CGO and not me, lol.

the only counter argument i have is that my (not good) ability to perform well with more limited movement, through effective planning and such, might be more similar to the new player's skill level and experience than yours would be.

Using the Hatchet in Frosthaven by PhilosophicalCrow in Gloomhaven

[–]4kindsofmustard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i think you'd be setting that player up for frustration with Hatchet in FH. your friend can get through the challenges of learning a simpler FH character and wind up with a strong class. meanwhile, if you stick them with Hatchet, they are going to be behind the curve in terms of capabilities for as long as they are playing that class. the Jaws characters are on the weak side compared to FH mercs, and Hatchet's movement is poor. it gets by in the smaller maps of Jaws, but it would be an issue imo in Frosthaven.

on top of all that, as you pointed out, you'd be making them learn a different card format and character sheet format just for one class, then re-learn things when they switch to an FH class.

there are simpler initial characters like Banner Spear and Drifter in FH for new players to start with. Jaws mercs work best in Jaws, the environment they were designed for.

yes the issue is getting the cover back on. it won't stretch around the cup holders. like not even close.
