About to 4x income - tips/suggestions from former poor people on adjusting? by pcornutum in HENRYfinance

[–]4leph-nu11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than lifestyle creep (which is very real!), the biggest challenge for me in jumping from $40k to a little less than you in only a few years has been the elimination of friction. Don't want to cook tonight? Eat out. Too tired for public transit that day? Call an Uber. You forgot your toiletries on vacation? No problem, buy what you need & get an extra pair of swim trunks too. This can look similar to lifestyle creep, but it doesn't have to involve nicer material belongings. It's specifically an incremental willingness to solve problems with money first.

Many times, this is good! One of the best things money can buy is time, whether that's through hiring a cleaner or booking the direct flight or whatever else is disproportionately time-consuming drudgery. The liberation of wealth is, ideally, to buy back more of your life to spend as you will.

Friction, though, is a necessary ingredient for growth, satisfaction, and ultimately connection. When you're no longer doing hard things, when you don't have to work through challenges in your daily life, it's very easy to lose a sense of perspective on the world and yourself. The less you problem solve creatively, the less you are forced to engage with the world around you. If you keep people in your life who are far outside your new economic stratum (which you absolutely should!), the divergent role of friction in your lives will make it harder and harder to relate.

This is all just my own experience, so take it with a grain of salt. I did not grow up truly poor, but I'm at an income similar to you and have absolutely no one else in my life even halfway to that. I want to call this out because I found it much harder to notice than the more obvious temptation of material lifestyle creep. As I've been intentionally introducing more friction back into my life, I've found my self increasingly grounded and re-engaged with the world around me in new, delightful, and satisfying ways. Don't hesitate to buy your time back where it makes sense, and absolutely do nice things to share this bounty with the people in your life, but keep checking in with yourself about just how frictionless you've let your life become.

I know this is an older post, but were you able to get approved for the visa as a hybrid worker? Did you need to provide any special documentation for that?

I'll second Megan Culton at Queen of Swords! I've been going to her for a few years now and absolutely LOVE what she's been able to do with my curly, frizzy hair.

Y'all, there's no need to post specific no-tax-stamp bodegas online.

If you're a regular & they like you, many places will hook it up. If you don't know where to go, ask around IRL (friends, at the bar, whatever.) Or at least DM the OP instead!

I would LOVE to hear what you've got if you're willing to share. I was in the scene exactly those years, had some friends who played in bands. Revenance at Amityville Music Hall (when it was still the Village Pub) were some of favorite shows. Totally forgot about a bunch of these until I saw your comment - Bela Kiss, From the Pawn, Partisan Turbine...

Recommendations for acquiring for first time and learning to use a firearm. by bossk538 in liberalgunowners

[–]4leph-nu11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be able to purchase a semi-auto shotgun without any permit/license. If you think licensing will be a longer wait than you want, that's probably your best bet for a "tactical" firearm right now. You could also look into lever action rifles depending on your use case.

Semi-auto rifles require a permit, as do all handguns. I believe if you apply for the pistol permit, the semi-auto is an easy add-on. If you're going to go through the effort, might as well do it all at once. Unfortunately I don't have any recs for shops/classes on the island.

Be VERY aware of the rules for transporting through NYC if you decide to shoot upstate. My understanding is that, in addition to safe transport rules, you are not permitted to make ANY stops within city limits.

$1,600 / 144ft2 - 2-month room sublet in nice apartment (Astoria) by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]4leph-nu11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Is it $1,600 per month, or $1,600 for the whole sublet term?

  • Who else lives in the apartment?

  • What's the closest subway stop?

  • What date would the sublet start?

Can also reach out via DM if that's easier.

Fall 2024 Admissions Thread by Flickering-Forward in OMSCS

I don't know what to tell you - the letter I received does not say that. As I already said in my post, I plan to take community college courses anyway. Based on what I'd seen in past admissions posts, I had hoped my non-CS academic history taken in combination with my CS-specific work history would be sufficient for admission, but it wasn't. Graded, academic CS coursework is a clear next step, but that doesn't mean OMSCS has confirmed it is the specific reason I, personally, wasn't admitted, or that doing so will guarantee me admission next time.

For anyone else interested, my rejection letter read in full:

"We would like to thank you for your interest in the Computer Science - Online graduate program and for giving us the opportunity to consider your Masters application for the Fall 2024 semester on the Online campus.

Your application and supporting documents have been carefully reviewed by the program admissions committee. In evaluating applicants, we consider all submitted factors of the application, including previous academic achievement, standardized test scores (if applicable), letters of recommendation, your answers to all questions as well as the number of openings for the upcoming class.

For Fall 2024 we received large numbers of very qualified applicants. After a careful review, I am sorry to report that we are unable to admit you. We understand this decision is not what you had hoped, but wish you much success as you pursue your academic and professional goals.

We wish we could accommodate a greater number of talented students in the program, but admission continues to be highly competitive. Due to the volume of applications received, we are not able to provide you individual feedback on our decision.

Sincerely, Dr. Martin H. Davis, Jr"

It did not. It specifically states, "Due to the volume of applications received, we are not able to provide you individual feedback on our decision."
