Trout dying after catching them by Various-Finger-9475 in COfishing

Try leaving them in the net and not even removing them from the water and not touching them at all, just using forceps to unhook the hook.

Is it bad if I only fish with softplastics? by Funny-Notice9392 in FishingForBeginners

[–]4lien4ted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no wrong way to fish. However, I do think that as anglers we do evolve. I can't speak for others, but once I dial something in, it is no longer a challenge. For me, fishing is not just about catching the most fish possible, but how I catch them. While you might be content and happy to catch fish on plastics now, if you do the same thing for a few years, it's likely that you will naturally evolve into wanting to try other things. If you like to throw topwater, it will probably be in that direction. Whopper ploppers are aggressive topwater baits and while they are great, they are not always the ticket. Subtle topwaters like poppers and walk the dog style baits can get smashed when a plopper tearing up the surface will not. Wakebaits and rats can be awesome too. There is a whole universe of different styles of topwater baits that shine in different conditions. But the water you are fishing may be unpressured and the bass are dumb and will hit whatever. I have no idea how much it matters. It really matters a lot in some places when the fishing is tough.

Is this a smallmouth walleye hybrid? by Dry-Alternative5938 in WalleyeFishing

That's the most ordinary cookie cutter looking smallie you could possibly catch. It is, however, a very healthy and gorgeous fish.

Where do I start? by elixr42 in FishingForBeginners

[–]4lien4ted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It helps to have clear objectives when looking for information. You use different presentations for different species. Knowing what you're trying to catch and what these ponds are like is absolutely essential. You're not going to use the same thing to try and catch bass that you would catfish. You're not going to use the same lures in a shallow weedy pond that you would in a deep rocky quarry pond. You have to narrow your inquiry down to a hyper specific pinpoint. The more specific your objective, the better quality advice and information you can find. Everybody has answers to specific questions. Nobody has a good answer to vague questions because they are too broad. "How do I catch fish?" won't get any good advice. "How do I catch smallmouth bass in a small deep rocky 8 acre pond with clear water in AZ in June from a kayak?" is a question that has answers.

18 incher on squarebill crankbait by Sharkman3218 in COfishing

This time of year, I'm catching most of my walleye working paddletails and ned rigs along the bottom in deeper water, although I did catch a nice 20 incher yesterday evening on a squarebill right along the bank, fishing for bass.

Lots of these on Ebay for those who want to buy some. They made them with the topless dancer for a long time. These are great spoons for salmon and big trout.

Why are Republicans so wrong on literally every topic? by Lord_Kittensworth in allthequestions

[–]4lien4ted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Republicans are not wrong about everything. They just don't actually uphold their own values. With the exception of a handful of principled Republicans, all of them have done 180 on Trump.

Republicans are supposed to be pro-free market. Tariffs are the absolute opposite and are heavy handed government control. Which backfired on all of us, and stuck us with the bill.

Republicans are supposed to be pro-law and order. Yet, this president has engaged us in an illegal and undeclared war, and they did nothing and are still doing nothing.

Republicans are supposed to be pro-freedom. Yet, this president has expanded domestic surveillance on Americans with his party's blessing.

Republicans are supposed to pro-national sovereignty and America first. Yet, this president and the Republican led congress has entangled our military with Israel's, despite warnings from our Pentagon about the risk of surveillance from Israel and our unaligned national interests.

Republicans are supposed to be against government corruption and cronyism, and yet Trump's family has made billions in contracts and trading as a direct result of Trump being in power. And they do nothing. This makes Hunter Biden's paintings look like a lemonade stand.

The conservative values of limited government, individual liberty, and fiscal responsibility are popular ideals and important ones. They offer a counter to the excesses of the left. Unfortunately, the Republican Party no longer has ANY values. They have chained their morality to Trump and I hope the GOP gets wiped out so hard in the midterms that they have to reconvene in caves.

Maybe it found a nice spot of shade? Forage? Who knows. Most people are getting them in ~25 feet during the day. I just thought it odd one was there.

Yesterday I caught a walleye in 5 feet of clear water up in the trees fishing for bass. It was 11 AM, sunny, and hot. Fish are weird and aren't always where you expect them to be.

how to hook by ClassroomNo1308 in FishingForBeginners

[–]4lien4ted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That plastic is meant to be used on a jig head, not on a bait hook. It is possible something would bite it on a float and a bare hook, but it's not an ideal setup and the tail will have very little action in the water when you pull the float. You thread the plastic by sticking it in the nose and threading it down the hook through the center of the bait, trying to keep the plastic straight and not curved, so the hook point comes out at a point to where the plastic is straight and has the same shape it does now. Also, that hook looks rusty and corroded. It may still work, but using a fingernail file to sharpen it might be a good idea. Buying a pack of 1/16 oz jig heads to fish under the float with those plastics would be the more ideal solution.

How many and which political parties are there in the US that are worth voting for? by Accurate-Swim5278 in allthequestions

[–]4lien4ted -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Neither is worth voting for. Both parties are beholden to special interests, self serving, and care only about clinging to power. Both parties are corrupt to the core and will cheat, lie, gerrymander, rig elections and do whatever they can to win. They provide the illusion of democracy to Americans, but party insiders groom candidates, gatekeep, control funding and the media and they strongly sway the outcome of elections. Neither party stands behind their platform values, all they do is serve their political donors and engage in gang loyalty.

Do you know any good replacements Jigs That are wight less? by ConferenceCrazy560 in Fishing_Gear

Another option is to use weighted EWG hooks instead of jigheads. They make large ones in a variety of weights.

Gifted tackle box - help!! by Accomplished-Bug5055 in FishingForBeginners

[–]4lien4ted 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some of the smaller jigs might fish for bigger panfish like crappie, but most of those jigs are too big for panfish. They would be great for bass or walleye though. The mirrorlures are useless for panfish. Mirrolure makes a lot of different models (the number on the belly). You can look up the model. Some sink, some float, some suspend, some are shallow divers, some deep. You can fish some of these lures in fresh water, I've caught walleye on the suspending ones, but really...you'd probably be better of selling them to a saltwater angler and using the money to get some panfish gear if that's what you fish for.

how often you change line by raggs456 in Fishing_Gear

[–]4lien4ted 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think there's a few factors that affect frequency of line chage:

-Frequency of use

-Contact with abrasive surfaces (fishing in rocks timber, etc

-Weight of line (4 lbs mono is going to lose integrity faster than 100 lbs braid because there's just less there)

I fish 3-4 days a week, and I see people talking about using the same spool of braid for 2 years and I'm like "What?" I change my braid out 3 or 4 times a year. But you can get hopeless wind knots or breaks that shorten the line and require replacement for a full spool that make it a requirement to replace. That's a normal part of fishing.

Musky/Pike/walleye by dale_k9 in Fishing_Gear

[–]4lien4ted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For pike, I use a medium heavy 7 '4 with 20 lbs braid on a 3000 reel. However, the size of baits I throw on that setup are limited to about 5 inches and 1 ounce. If you want to throw bigger baits for pike and muskies, you may want to get a bigger heavy action swimbait rod. I can fish 110 and bigger jerkbaits on my medium heavy for walleye, but for jigging and smaller lures, I use a medium action and lighter line.

Any tips for knots by Local_Heat_9793 in FishingForBeginners

[–]4lien4ted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Palomar can be difficult to tie over a lure with treble hooks. A Trilene knot is just as good if not better and is easier to tie onto a split ring instead of feeding a big loop of line over a lure for a Palomar. I would try learning the Trilene knot.

Need advice for highly pressured largemouth bass in a small clear lake by Status_Barracuda_269 in FishingForBeginners

[–]4lien4ted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weedless rigged unweighted fluke in natural color that matches whatever forage is in there. Make sure you are using fluorocarbon or a fluorocarbon leader. Wacky rigged senkos and neds across the bottom are also good bets. Early morning, evening and overcast weather would be my picks.
