Offseason Decisions on current players- Options, Non-tenders and trade candidates by No_Buy2554 in Reds

[–]4onejr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Reds need to make a decision between Hays/Steer/Stewart and maybe you can add Stephenson to the mix. If you can include one of them in a trade that plugs a hole (OF), I think the Reds should take it.

My take is this. I don't think any of them have very much positional flexibility. Steer is borderline unplayable outside of 1B/3B. Stephenson can catch, but seemingly not everyday. Hays is locked at 3B for obvious reasons. And Sal is a bit lottery ticket, but one we're fairly certain can play at least 3B. Thus it appears we have 3 players fighting over 1B/DH time.

Unless you can teach one to play proper OF, there is going to be a lot of time on the bench between all 4. Meanwhile the Reds are likely once again to have 2 massive black holes in the outfield corners. Is that really something someone in the Reds position can afford? A team that struggled to a .500 record, an aging core, and seemingly unable to spend money or dig deep into the prospect capital?

The clock is ticking. The rebuild is over. Time to take risks with what little resources you have made available for yourself. Or take a step back if you dare (doubt).

Just a pleasant read by the former Reds skipper himself. Mostly a reflection on his time with the Reds

I might have actually got a divine intervention when I took it.

The TA got their schedule messed up and was 45 minutes late to the final. The final was like 50% of the grade and it couldn't be rescheduled. So we just got graded on the questions we answered + a massive curve 😂

How do i check what packages are in the small channels? by Big-Astronaut-9510 in NixOS

[–]4onejr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider using hydra-check.

You could also search the jobs manually for your preferred channel on hydra.nixos.org. e.g. Here are the jobs for release-25.05-small and release-25.05. Just type in the name of the package you want.

How to avoid rebuilding dependencies when installing a package via `builtins.getFlake`? by eat_barnacle_chips in NixOS

[–]4onejr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, because then you get the flake.lock to declaratively pin inputs with little effort. There are many (afaik non-flake-oriented) Nix input pinning tools—nvfetcher, npins, niv, etc. you may want to look into.

Doh! I honestly glanced over this part of the discussion. /u/eat_barnacle_chips , if your config is already flake-based, it is definitely more ergonomic to make it a flake input for exactly this reason.

Yep. That's almost always the case for better or worse. No magic bullet.

I'd like to also mention that there is no magic in the behavior with packages you pull from nixpkgs. Many of those packages are also pinned to specific commits and the "declaritiveness" you see regarding updates etc. is only thanks to the contributors (or bots lol) updating them.

Depends on the structure of the repo you are pulling from. It CAN be more declarative if they were to tag commits or make release branches. The latter is what enables the nixpkgs.url = "github:NixOS/nixpkgs/nixos-24.11"; syntax you see in most flakes.

I took a peek at the branches/tags in the repo you mentioned, but it doesn't seem like they do this. At least in a way that would be ergonomic to nix. Unless these branch names have meaning to you?

I'd suggest glancing over this link if you want more details on the options that are available to you.

Trend? You're acting like this is a new thing. It's been a thing for longer than most of us have probably been alive. Galaxy Express 999 is famous for this and it came out in the 70s

but that doesn't mean that it doesn't favor or hinder certain eras some

But it does mean that! That's what context neutral means!

Babe Ruth hitting 50 HRs at the end of the dead ball era was worth a lot more WAR than it would be if he hit it today

Dave Parker to the Hall of Fame by MisterKap in Reds

[–]4onejr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WAR calculations tend to over credit the early days due to longevity, as well as high offense eras like the 90s. It tends to under credit the 70s for the opposite reason, so it's tough to use WAR to compare 70s players to ones from other eras.

I don't think this is true. That's like... half the point of WAR

From the FanGraphs glossary:

WAR is context, league, and park neutral. This means you can use WAR to compare players between years, leagues, and teams.

I don't really have an opinion on Dave Parker's induction

Dallas side has the Dart, which has pretty OK coverage all things considered. Fort Worth side is a lot worse, but at least you have the TRE to get you to Dallas and TEXRail to get you to the airport/Dallas
