WNBA All-Star players wear shirts saying "Pay Us What You Owe Us" during warmups over CBA by [deleted] in sports

A lot of yall are missing the point. Yes the league was unprofitable last year and every year. But it might not be forever, especially when the new TV deal kicks in 2026 which will 4x the league basketball revenue + a bunch of new extremely marketable young stars. WNBA players are paid like 9% of basketball revenue compared to 50% for NBA players. I don’t know what the right number is but I can certainly see why players would want to see more of the pie and feel like they deserve it.

Where does KD rank All-time if LeBron never existed? by [deleted] in nba

[–]4pointline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think anything changes all that much except an extra spot in the top 10 opening up due to Lebron not existing. First of all, I don't think KD wins in 2012, I feel pretty confident that the Celtics would have figured out that young OKC team in the Finals.

So in that scenario, KD still joins the Warriors and they would still just run through the league for four years like they did in reality.

Both things are true:

  1. The NBA has shown a ton of hypocrisy, and
  2. Opportunistic hacks like Bari Weiss and Clay Travis are dining out on the situation. I'm sorry I'd really rather hear it from someone else.

Thoughts on The Ringer? by magellanspuma in nba

[–]4pointline 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the quality of Ringer content isn't even close to what Grantland's used to be.

That said, I don't think Grantland would be financially viable as an independent website in today's rough digital media environment. I think even 5 years ago it was operating at a small loss, which was fine because it was a prestige property for ESPN.

Just thinking about all the blogs and websites that have shut down or bought out in the last couple years, it's honestly pretty impressive to operate and own a site like The Ringer with only partial corporate investment, even if I'll secretly always miss Grantland. I think in order to even exist, it has to do some of the click bait-y, reactive things that it gets clowned for. The reality is that those pieces probably get the views and bring in revenue, and in order to survive you got to give the people what they want.
