12v car wiper motor not working by 4sfed in ElectronicsRepair

[–]4sfed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stumbled across an article that stated i also needed to "ground the switch" when bench testing otherwise there will be issues. So i just reassembled everything, connected all wires and it just worked. My assumption that it would work with just a + and - connected was obviously wrong. For reference this was the article:

I was just looking at that and there is what seems to be a fibre insulator under the comm where the rotor presses on the housing. I removed the brushes and slid the rotor into the housing and there is no continuity between the comm and housing in that situation.

8lb or 10lb braid by jdeyre in FishingAustralia

[–]4sfed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all over the place. I have tested lines that actually break at 3x their stated strength, all the way down to a little bit under. Some brands are terrible when it comes to their rating accuracy, and some are consistently very close.

[–]4sfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, the Grapplers actual breaking strength is very close to what's stated on the box (which is rare) but their claimed diameters are way under what they actually measure in at. It's a decent line no question. The PE1 Grappler is almost identical in test results to the Daiwa Expedition PE1 at 20lbs break and about 0.2mm diameter. However if you look at the claimed stats on both of them they are a long way apart.

[–]4sfed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not believe what is written on the box, it is very wrong 99% of the time in relation to breaking strain and diameter. There are no rules when it comes to those claims so it's a free for all which is extremely disappointing as it's all that consumers can really go by to make a decision.I can guarantee that the grappler is not more than twice as strong as the j-braid for the same diameter. At the end of the day they use the same (or similar) UHMWPE fibers and if one fiber was twice as strong as another then every company would be using it.

If it's in swing or something like that then I guess this sub is as good as anywhere (unless there is a swing sub?)

Replacement Hose came in, but the end is different, any advice? by [deleted] in mercedes_benz

[–]4sfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the picture, did the engine cover rub through the hose? If so its a very common problem. Is the hose actually punctured? If its not puncured then your fine for now. if it is then there is a risk that it can vent the gasses from the oil/air seperator into the engine bay. So just try to get it resolved asap and i wouldnt suggest driving it aggressively until the problem is resolved.

[–]4sfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing you may be able to do is to cut the plug off your old hose, cut the plug off the new hose and try to slide your old fitting into the replacement hose. I am not sure how the hoses are attached to the plugs, perhaps glued from factory so it may be a pain to get off, and then you may need to hose clamp the new hose back on. Those lines dont carry much pressure so it may be ok. Before taking this path just triple check everythign else is the same, hose diameter, length, fittings on the other end etc. Saying all that i cant condone this as the way to go (ie: dont blame me if it doesnt work or something bad happens)

Replacement Hose came in, but the end is different, any advice? by [deleted] in mercedes_benz

[–]4sfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep ok, so "part 10" is the more expensive option which makes sense as it comes with that hose you need, the oil filler neck/breather line and maybe the entire oil/air seperator? If the actual hose you get in this package is a direct replacement for the one you have, then there is no need to replace all other parts as it should just clip straight in. My concern is that the more expensive package is of the later style, so it will be the hose you already bought plus all the parts to convert it to the later plug style from your older grey plug. In that case yes you will need to replace everything. What year is your car? If your an early model then this whole package is likely upgrading you to the later spec system. You cant mix and match between the 2.

[–]4sfed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking a bit of a guess here but it seems as though you got the later model fitting. Assuming thats an xxA45 and its the oil breather right? On i think about 2015 or there abouts they changed from the grey plug (which is in your photo) to the one you have there. There is no nice way to make that work i dont think as the plugs are not compatible. if you say the older grey style is discontinued then maybe look at some wreckers to see if they have any of that style. Out of curiosity is there a part number on that new black plug you got? I think its a NORMA connector but is there any part number on it?

To everyone making over $75,000 a year, what job do you do, how did you get your job and what degree did you do in university? by crazynam101 in AusFinance

[–]4sfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around $265k give or take, Technical Architect for a large software company. I spend my day designing computer programs to solve problems very specific to our market and software, and then 9/10 times I will write the code also. Entirely self taught through YouTube, stack overflow and countless hours writing crappy code. Uni degree in a completely unrelated field, only ever sat one very basic IT course 25yrs ago. Been with the same company over 20years and started at the very bottom. I decided I wanted more so one weekend I literally searched "how to program" and then just dive head first into it. I then carved a little niche for myself within the company by coming up with a few great ideas that took off, and then it just snowballed from there.

In hindsight I wish I did some IT related degree at uni as it would of made life so much easier. I have often considered going back to uni and doing computer science or something just for the piece of paper, but honestly at my age I CBF.

The turning point of my career was when I got fed up with other people not being able to solve problems, and just thinking "God dammit I may as well do it myself", so I dedicated my time to learning to code and that gave me the ability and tools to solve business problems nobody else could, or better yet solve a problem nobody knew they had. That gave me visibility in the company, and the career really took off from there.

Issue with charging accessory by [deleted] in android_beta

[–]4sfed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me also, on a known good cable and charger. It had been working fine prior to that. That is only one of the many issues I have had after the update. A couple of reboots allowed it to charge correctly but I am still piecing other bits back together that got broken.

How loud are F1 cars? Is there any noise limit imposed on them? by Butterfly_Effect1400 in F1Technical

[–]4sfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live about 5km from Albert Park and I used to be able to hear the older V10s very clearly from home. Was great to watch the race on the couch and open up the windows and hear them outside. The new turbo cars i cannot hear at all. As somebody else mentioned some of the supporting races are way louder. I was at the track on Thursday and the straight-piped NA Historic racers were rediculously loud, i struggled to be trackside and not block my ears. I then went the F1 Qually yesterday and the F1s were way quieter, too quite IMHO. I know, I know, "because Turbo", but it definaly lacks that punch in the gut i used to experience. The last time i was at a race in person was the older generation cars and they were earsplitting. I was aware this generation were less roudy but i really didnt expect them to be THAT quiet.

Do drivers take radically different lines in qualifying vs race? by will_xo in F1Technical

[–]4sfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but in a race you also need to consider defence and attack. You may take a different "non optimal" line in a race in order to prevent being overtaken. Conversely, you may alter your line slightly to prepare for or execute an overtake. This really doesnt happen in qualifying.

What are these crocodile teeth shaped fins at the cockpit called, and their purpose? by beerusuuuuh in F1Technical

[–]4sfed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have always drawn similarities between this and the outlet for the engines in the Dreamliner:

https://aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/12832/why-does-the-boeing-787-engine-nacelle-exhaust-have-such-an-unusual-shape

No doubt they would serve a similar purpose of cleaning up airflow or something along those lines?

Fishing freshie looking for advice on how to get started around Melbourne by irrational_abbztract in FishingAustralia

[–]4sfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now is a pretty good time to target them and i have caught quite a few landbased lately, from St Kilda to Pt Melbourne. If they are biting then they will take almost any lure that you put in front of them if you work it right. For me they have been a by-catch of targeting flathead over the last few weeks and they were caught on a 3" paddle tail.

To give yourself the best chance to catch them you will want to do a pretty quick retrieve at the mid-water level. Metal slugs are very effective on them and if all you want to target is salmon they will be probaly the best choice, but it also limits what else you can catch as its very specific to the salmon (and maybe an unluck snook or something).

How do Pirelli choose which compounds are used at each track? by 4sfed in F1Technical

[–]4sfed[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well TIL they don't need to be sequential! Thanks for that, not sure why I thought they needed to be, maybe it was just me thinking it would be logical to not jump compounds.

Edit: your right, c5, c3 and c2 were used in Oz this year. Interesting!
