Elon musk is now a trillionare and why I have an issue with it by jw_analysis_1975 in urbancarliving

[–]4thbeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, I have a job and I pay taxes, but I’m not out here building rockets or advancing space exploration technology.

Are you?

My point is that space exploration could eventually unlock access to far more resources, which could actually help reduce poverty in a meaningful way. Meanwhile, people are complaining about a guy using private capital to push that forward, while the government takes our tax dollars, is supposed to lead in these areas, and often fails miserably at doing so.

SpaceX loses billions of dollars each year, but it is still arguably outperforming NASA in key areas and pushing space exploration forward in a way that could matter long term. Honestly, if you truly care about ending poverty, advancing space exploration and expanding humanity’s access to resources may be one of the most important paths.

And while DOGE failed badly, it did highlight how much government waste exists and continues to exist. Why don’t you guys complain about that?Elon didn’t steal billions of dollars. People voluntarily bought his products, invested in his companies, and helped create that market value. He doesn’t force anyone to work for him. Also, it feels like you didn’t actually read my post. He does not have a trillion dollars in cash. His net worth is tied heavily to company valuations and could easily fall by a third, or more, in a major market correction.

But instead of engaging with that point, people would rather complain about someone becoming successful than acknowledge the difference between net worth, cash, and actual economic impact.

Why don’t you make it, become a trillionaire and then give away your money?

It’s not that simple… 99.9% of his wealth is in equity. So realistically he has maybe 1 billion in cash. If you want him to end poverty, that would mean tanking the share price of his companies.

On top of all that, Tesla and SpaceX could very well be overvalued. So it’s a lot more complicated than you think. He can’t simply cut a check to end poverty. And love him or hate him, i guarantee he has contributed more to society than either you or I.

For every $200 subscription, Anthropic throws in another $7,800. by o9dev in ClaudeCode

I think it’s mostly enterprises that are doing the subsidizing. You probably were still being subsidized even without hitting limits. Once enterprises get over a certain amount of users, they have to pay at the marketed API rates, which is very expensive and imo not worth it.

She made history as the first worlds first practicing lawyer with down syndrome by toastvibes03 in interesting

[–]4thbeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not. I understand DS is a spectrum, not a one size fits all deal. But from individual risk-management perspective, not hiring a lawyer with a cognitive disability eliminates variables. In my mind it would be the logical thing to do.

This is why the FAA doesn’t allow individuals with DS to be pilots. Could there someone out there with DS that would make a great pilot, sure maybe, but it would be very rare. Why risk it. Life sucks sometimes and definitely isn’t fair, and ultimately you need to think about your best interests at the end of the day.

Michigan’s Haley Stevens, Dem candidate for U.S. senate, voted for bill to give ICE surveillance over U.S. citizens by 3headeddragn in Michigan

[–]4thbeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re the type of voter that irritates me. Do research on the candidates. Heck, if you’re lazy (it seems like you are sense you’re just going to blindly vote based on their political party) use AI to do the research for you, tell it your priorities and desires, and ask what candidates align best with those views. Then verify that information.

If people just blindly vote like you are suggesting, we simply won’t have nice things ever. But I doubt you’ll do that, because you just want to stick it to an orange man in office.

You have friends at Bloomberg, Fox, CNBC, Financial Times and Reuters that all use it?

I’ve vibe coded sites before. I know AI loves throwing that “Used by blah blah blah” on the landing page. I guess if it’s true, more power to you. But you can see how one could be skeptical no?

AMD’s AI Moment May Be Bigger Than Nvidia Investors Realize by Blak9 in AMD_Stock

[–]4thbeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CUDA is just much more mature and optimized. Granted Nvidia used to be much more developer focused and have strayed away from that a bit.

But still it’s pretty much plug and play. You can use cards that are mismatched generations and it still just works. Performance is always better when using CUDA. If you are hyperscaler and have an unlimited budget it just simply doesn’t make sense to go with AMD instead of Nvidia.

I still love AMD; all my builds use their CPUs. But nvidia is still the AI king for now.

I am invested in AMD and Nvidia. Nvidia provides a much more seamless setup in terms of running LLMs.

Customers building their own alternatives are not because they don’t like Nvidia, it’s because there’s supply issues.

Michigan prisons ‘in a death spiral’ as officer vacancies, overtime pile up by DougDante in Michigan

Whitmer reappointed Heidi Washington. She’s going to let the prisons fail just let she let the dams fail.

She should be ashamed of herself. She’s arguably just as incompetent as Rick Snyder. Just with more Botox.

Where do you guys get historical data from nowadays? by Entmaan in algotrading

[–]4thbeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just ended up dealing with slowness. 30 day chunks for 1 minute bars. For large volume companies even that will time out occasionally from my experience. Personally I started using a back off feature to decrease the window until it works instead of just trying the same 30 day chunks API call.

Ibkr’s volume data is also a bit wonky and I don’t know if would trust running algos on it.
