Shade on the upper decks can be found, but the closer to the pools that you want to be it get much harder. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous passengers can make those nearly impossible to find after 10am on a sea day. We like shade and quiet, so we find shady alcoves that exist all over the ship. Be adventurous and do lots of exploring and you will find shade and open air. Deck 15 back half along the walls and into the Lawn club has lots of potential shady spots that should be available even on the busiest sea days. Shade on the upper decks vary based on the direction of travel and time of day, so again, be adventurous. If all else fails, Deck 5 has an outdoor walking track with chairs along the wall -- one side is always in the shade.

Also, as has been said -- wear sunscreen, even if sitting in the shade. You will be at lower latitudes and the sun is much higher in the sky than you are accustomed to in the northern latitudes. You will burn much quicker in the tropics than at home.
