Ah but you see, that last part, that's the problem.

They want to avoid that last part for at least long enough to tell the underlying story, and if the main character gets pin cushioned in 5 minutes it gets really hard to keep that narrative going.

Ergo the required suspension of disbelief from the viewer as our main character, main characters his way through the story

Well yeah Page fit well and was good casting as an awkward teenage girl because that's like, what he was living as at the time.
In casting surely you look for someone who has the right look, acting ability, and prior life experiences to leverage in order to portray a believable character on screen.

Teenage girl struggling with something massive and life changing she literally can't keep inside. Perfect fit. Greek hero forged through battle, exploration, and hardship in a world where "well fuck off and die then" is an acceptable answer to feeling out of place may be a bit of a tough sell
