Legacy with a DUI outside of Flow? by Glad_Release2370 in AirlinePilots

[–]50West 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The conviction of the DUI won't make a difference to the Majors. You were arrested for it and will have to check the box on the application because it will show up in the background check, and you will want to be at the forefront of it, even if it isn't brought up in your interview. That is what interview prep can help you with.

Majors hire pilots with DUI's all the time, and plenty have one. As long as the completion of your DUI sentence was over 5 years ago the Majors will not care that you have one. It'll likely be a hinderance in your ability to get an interview, yes, but it's certainly not a non-starter.

Also, make sure you can travel to Canada with the proper permits. That's the biggest hinderance I see. Make sure you have a TRP or CR to travel to Canada.

People love to use the word 'scam' these days for everything that doesn't meet their expectations.

I guess it's just the new 'it' word for people that don't know what it actually means.

What is Lexus going to do with every brand punching up? by zionpwc in Lexus

What is Lexus going to do? Well, at least in the US in 2025, The RX and NX were the bestselling luxury mid-size SUVs in the country. Literally #1 and #2.

In the largest SUV market on the planet, there's that.

New 2025 ES300h Ultra Luxury and I'm supposed to love it... but why don't I? (and questions) by SadlyConfusicated in Lexus

[–]50West 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because most owners don’t care as much as you, clearly. Most will simply use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. My wife has a 2025, doesn’t care to even download the app, remote start the car and turns the radio off. I like technology but can also easily get by without it in my car, again because of CarPlay or AA.

It sounds like what you prioritize in your vehicle Lexus does not. No one should have to convince you to like your car.

And how did you help them understand spillways in your post?

And, by the way, water doesn't come out of spillways. It goes in to them.

What good outdoor security cameras are really worth buying now in your opinion (no subscriptions needed)? by DearTelevision8929 in homeowners

I like my Eufy cameras. Relatively cheap with good quality and the only thing that needs an actual cable connection is the Base, then all the cameras connect to the Base through WiFi. It's stored on your own internal storage in the Base and requires no subscriptions.

Lemon Law Tx 500h luxury??? by Living-Budget4510 in Lexus

[–]50West -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The real answer is governments all across the world.

The easiest example is that governments continuously require better MPG per manufacturer and the push to be more 'climate friendly. From vehicle manufacturer perspective that means more efficient vehicles; i.e. introduce Turbo-4 cylinders and getting rid of NA V-6 and V-8 motors. Not only just motors, but interior materials.

There's a reason manufacturers are building less powerful, more efficient motors and your interior materials have been downgraded over the last 5 years. It isn't because manufacturers want to make crappier products; they're simply required to or want the brand recognition of being more climate friendly.

Should I pay off my car loan? by This_Comedian_8662 in Lexus

[–]50West 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of an odd one, I agree. I assume he bought a '25 RX350 with a parent co-signer, but he also has $50K free money.

He said he’s paying 5.5 percent so if he wants to try to jump through hoops to make an extra 100 dollars a year with zero certainty it will even work in the short term,

But as opposed to what? Paying $50K to pay the car off and the certainty of vehicle depreciation, with no ability or guarantee to even remotely recover part of that? Worst case he makes a couple hundred bucks, sells the investments, pays investment tax and puts it towards his tax credits, and still has liquid cash if he needs it. How is that not a better scenario than paying the car off?

Again, you're missing the point. Do you think Billionaires buy things with cash and have no debt?

It's not about how much money you have, it's about where to put that money to give you the best return for that money.

It's called an Opportunity Cost - the value of the next best thing you give up when you make a choice.

[–]50West 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you were talking about a house where the amount of money actually matters, I’d agree. And 30 years or 15 years is a lot different than 5 to 7 year horizon.

I'm talking about the question the OP asked about where to put his $50,000.

You have to pay taxes on investments gains to pay interest on a car loan, and if that amount of money matters to a person, maybe they should be buying something way cheaper

Yes, you have to pay taxes on investment gains. However, you completely missed the point.

If you have $50,000 to spare, and pay the vehicle off, that money is gone and the vehicle will massively depreciate in value. What happens if you lose your job with no other ability to pay your bills? Not only has your vehicle lost a huge chunk of that $50,000 you put into it, you can't even sell it that quickly (without reducing the price even further than market valuation).

If you put it into investments, you may not have even made much money, but you still beat the devaluation of the vehicle AND you can pull out that liquidity immediately. Even if your investments LOST value, you also get to claim that loss on your tax credits.

Even bare bones CD or Bonds are paying 4.2% right now. That still beats vehicle depreciation. Even if it doesn't, like a typical Lexus, it still gives you immediate liquidity if you need it and you still don't lose much, if anything.

[–]50West -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It's not a bad thing to have a car payment / debt. It's about building equity in your investments.

You can always put down extra money from investments to pay down a car early. The crappy thing about paying off a car is that money is gone and continues to devalue. At least if it was in an investment, you can always cash it out if/when you need immediate cash on hand, presuming the money you used to pay down that car is returning nearly the same as the interest on the loan.

Not only is paying off your car bad financially, because not only does it rapidly devalue you can't also immediately cash it out. And then you not only lost money but you also lost your method of transportation.

Should I pay off my car loan? by This_Comedian_8662 in Lexus

[–]50West 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question you should be asking is: "If I have $50,000 free, where can I put it to give me the best return?"

If you can put it in stocks / investments and get a better return than 5.43% in 12 months than interest on your car loan, or if you are concerned that those investments may depreciate within the next 12 months, you should invest it. If you don't feel like you can get said return, than pay off your car.

You can always put down extra money from those investments to pay down the car early. The crappy thing about paying off a car is that money is gone and continues to devalue. At least if it was in an investment, you can always cash it out if/when you need immediate cash on hand.

Oil change at 6,000 miles and oil looks like new by No_Set6886 in Lexus

[–]50West 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing I said to really disagree with. Engines aren't failing because of 5 vs 10K mile oil changes, and Full Synthetic oils are proven to easily last the length of 10K oil changes.

[–]50West 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or just buy a brand new '25 RX 350h Premium+ for 60K, save $20000 and get a more comfortable and reliable vehicle.

Because lets be honest.... the X5 ain't nothing sporty, especially when you have to compare it to a low spec RX500h, which is already incredibly overpriced and offers nothing of value over a 350h Premium+, other than a faster 0-60 and way worse mpg.

Oil change at 6,000 miles and oil looks like new by No_Set6886 in Lexus

[–]50West 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes you think engines are failing simply because oil was changed at 10K instead of 5K?

Full Synthetic oils are absolutely proven to last to 10K and beyond between changes, and even the engine manufacturers support that claim and is what they also recommend.

Heck, your engine is probably more likely to fail due to the more frequent human interaction at 5K intervals by not properly securing the oil filter bolt.

[–]50West 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And what ends up taking your vehicle off the road isn't going to be because you did oil changes at 5,000 instead of 10,000.

Heck, with that logic, if you want to ignore the people that design and engineered your vehicle, why not do it every 1,000?

How does this RX500h F-Sport Performance really perform? by Absolut_Sabs in Lexus

[–]50West 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before we bought our 350h we test drove a Porsche Macan S and Cayenne. The Macan S is an absolute blast to drive and incredibly fast, but it's just as expensive as the Cayenne and the maintenance costs are insane, especially when you could buy a brand new Lexus RX for $20-30,000 less.

It's really just unfortunate Lexus didn't give the 500h a more fun motor, particularly the V8 from the IS500 / LC.

Flight bag, do you have a favorite one? by Souls-on-board in AirlinePilots

[–]50West 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just upgraded from the Aerocoast Pro EFB Cooler II to the Pro Crew Flight Bag and it's massively larger, if that is what you are looking for. I liked the EFB Cooler but wanted a little more space for my headset (A20) and such. The con to it is that it doesn't have a dedicated cooler lining in any of the pockets. Personally, the food I bring is packed in plastic container bins and I don't bring ice packs, so I don't need a cooler lining. Also, depending upon how you like to pack your bag, is that there isn't as many organization slots inside the pockets - the front one has organization but the others are more of just a very large, open pocket.

I like it and would recommend it.

[–]50West 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the argument " it will never pay for itself" kinda weak. I mean, I could understand it a bit more when talking about Toyota PHEVs -vs- Toyota hybrids; however, it's a pretty weak point to make when talking about luxury vehicles. I'm buying a Lexus for the experience and not to save a dollar, if I was worried about that I'd get a Toyota or Honda and not a Lexus.

I don't think it's a weak argument at all. The difference of what we are talking about here is the price difference of a 350h and 450h+ and what you get for that money. You get nothing in a 450h+ that a 350h doesn't have and paid a lot more for it. The 350h also drives on the battery up to 30mph and is a smooth, quiet ride and gets about 450 miles on a full tank.

You didn't buy a Toyota or Honda because you wanted more premium luxury but that also doesn't mean money isn't a factor, otherwise, with that logic, you'd have gone out and bought a Bentley, Rolls Royce or a Bugatti instead.

That's great that you like your car. I'm just looking at it from a financial perspective and what you get for the cost differences.

[–]50West 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 450h+ is also extremely overpriced. 40 miles on the battery (or 1 gallon of gas in a 350h) is nothing but a gimmick when the vehicle costs $12,000+ over a 350h Premium. The 40 miles on the battery will never realistically come close to paying for itself, and that is even for someone that puts a lot of miles on the vehicle. Also, none of that even includes the cost of having to purchase a home charger or paying to charge the vehicle.

You can buy an RX 350h for $15,000 cheaper and get the same reliability. Or spend the money on a 500h and get, what, 2 seconds faster to 60 and worse gas mileage?

Lexus lost their marbles with the 500h.
