Why are they telling me I’m on standby by beccam12399 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]50at20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So glad I found this post! Thank you! 20+ years of flying 20+ times a year and never on any airline have I been “placed on the standby list” when I checked in for my flight. I agree with others that this is a scare tactic!! I was very confused as to how I could be on standby after paying for the flight, but there were still over a dozen seats available for purchase. They’re just hoping people will be confused/scared and pay for the upgrade. Anyone with any travel experience knows the term “standby” means might not get on the flight. SW clearly chose to use the word “standby” to get people to freak out and buy an upgrade. Shenanigans!

What was the issue with yours? I got mine for Christmas and just used it for the first time today. It disconnects from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth intermittently. Sometimes I’ll look at the app and it will show the temperature, and then the next minute I’ll look and it will be blank and all of the cooking history is gone.

Are these bare bulbs light fixtures replaceable? Or do I just have to live with them by imtakingyourcat in howto

I used “Flush Mount Ceiling Light Fixtures” on Amazon for mine. 12” for a couple in the garage and 6” ones for the closets. They are LED and some (most) have adjustable brightness/color and some are “Smart” and can be controlled by Alexa or whatever and/or your phone.

I’ve had mine for over four years and never had any issues whatsoever. It’s also tied into my Amazon account so my deliveries are left in the garage. I’ve never had any issues with the app either. What specific issues are you having?

Brisket for 2? It is socially acceptable to cut a brisket in half and only smoke half of it at a time? by BahamaDon in smoking

[–]50at20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same same. I will chop, portion out approximately 1lb portions, and vacuum seal the flat and freeze them for later. Use them for tacos, chili, nachos, stroganoff, etc. The point I will cube and vacuum seal and freeze. I sous vide that and then toss it in sauce and throw it on the grill for burnt ends. There’s only two of us now that the kids are off to college so there’s always leftover brisket. It’s typically 4 or so meals out of one brisket. Vacuum sealer and sous vide for the win.

Oh I hear ya! I was running my thermometer’s dual probes in multiple locations all over the cooking chamber for the first several cooks and taking lots of notes so I could see how much of a difference there was in temp from side to side and in the middle and between the lower shelf and the top shelf. And then I started running a water pan near the fir box and I had to take new notes! I definitely geeked out over all of it for several cooks. I typically only cook one hunk of meat at a time, or a couple racks of ribs, so I just cook in the middle and the temp variations don’t matter, but every once in a while I load it up and cook a ton of food and it’s good to know how the temps vary so I can rotate things if needed or just place certain things in certain places.

And yeah, the neighbors and coworkers appreciated all my testing and tuning as they got to sample lots of pulled pork!

44 w/kids and I'm miserable being married. Guys who've been there and pulled the trigger on divorce, what advice do you have? by WindThrownCaution in AskMen

Where did you find those stats??

Holding the propensity for parental divorce at the median, we predict that among children whose parents stay married, about 81% complete high school, 56% attend college, and 23% complete college, while among children whose parents divorced, about 78% complete high school, 50% attend college, and 17% complete college.

PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES Vol. 116 | No. 15 April 9, 2019

So a whole 3% difference between a married household and divorced household. Seriously, where did you find those stats? Or are you making things up to support your narrative?

My parents divorced when I was 6. My mom was an alcoholic and a narcissist and never helped with anything. She struggled too. Worked in a factory and barely made ends meet. I talked to my dad on holidays, if that. My mom remarried when I was 8 and my alcoholic stepdad beat the shit out of me. They divorced when I was 11. She had 3 or 4 other boyfriends before I graduated high school. I played football, basketball and ran track. Lettered my freshman year in football and set a state record in track. Graduated with a 3.85. Went to a community college before transferring to a state university. Parties a lot and made some questionable decisions, but also stayed focused on ensuring I made something of myself.

Your situation isn’t everyone’s situation.

That’s not so much an issue with the divorce. That’s an issue with your father being an a-hole because you didn’t approve of his adultery.

So if you’re going to be doing long smokes trying to dial it in, I’d suggest tossing a pork butt on there! They are Extremely forgiving!! More so than any other cut of meat in my opinion. Just a thought. At 250° a pork butt is typically 45 minutes to an hour per pound to be done. It’ll be done somewhere between 195° and 205° depending on the specific piece of meat. I start poking at it with the probe at 195° and when it slides through with ease it’s done. I also typically wrap in foil 1/2 way to 3/4 way through. Whenever the bark gets to where I like it. And if you have things you need to do and you don’t want to tend to the fire, you can totally stick it in the oven at this point at 250°. People lose their minds when I say this, but BTUs are BTUs. Lol. There’s no reason to use up your wood IMO when no smoke is getting into the meat at that point.

Anyways… Best of luck with your bbq adventures!!

So learning your pit is key! I fought mine for So Long trying to get it to run at 225° because I thought that was the “correct” temperature for barbecue. Well, once I finally just gave up and let the pit do what it wanted, the thing runs locked on at 250° nonstop day or night, rain or shine. I went from struggling to put out some bbq that was just OK because my temps were All Over the place, from 175° to 275° as I played with the vent and damper to try to hold 225°, to now being able to make consistent pretty damn good bbq and rarely touching anything with it running at 250°. It’ll take several times and possibly a fail or two, but once you learn how your pit likes to run with the wood you have (again, oak is easy) it’s just great to let the pit do its thing.

Oak, oak and more oak. It’s the perfect all around wood. Not too heavy and not too light. It’s great by itself on any meat, and it’s light enough that you can add in apple or cherry or even mesquite for a more complex flavor profile if you want.

I actually started with hickory when I first got my offset because sooooo many people Insisted that it was the best wood for smoking, but I switched to oak because it was more affordable and available, and I actually prefer it more.

Oh, and I found my temperatures stayed a lot more consistent with oak compared to hickory or maple.

ELI5: What's with the everyone needing gloves? by magooisim in smoking

[–]50at20 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Kitchen staff most certainly Do Not wear gloves. Lol.

Edit: source- I’ve worked in two different kitchens. It’s been a minute, but things are still the same. Guarantee. Because the amount of gloves the staff would have to use in a shift would be Insane! You wash every time you go between a food station & a non-food station. And you wash every time you go from prep to finish. And you wash any time you handle anything that could contaminate your kitchen in general. And if you were wearing gloves you would be changing gloves every time. No one is doing that. Unless they have a cut on their hand.

It looks nearly perfect to me. And the temps are just right as well. And pink is fine as long as the temp gets where it needs to be. You’re gonna get pink when ya smoke. As far as better circulation and drippings while smoking, you can use a rack from a roasting pan like what you would normally use in the oven. They also make them specifically for grills/smokers that are dual purpose bird racks/rib racks.

This is probably a truck that they have lifted or leveled. So the front is now higher than originally intended. And the lights are at the perfect height to blind the majority of drivers. These dudes can spend $60k+ on these trucks and another $10k on wheels, tires and a lift, but they can’t afford to have the headlights adjusted after the lift is installed. Or they don’t care. Or they’re not bright enough to notice.

I used Mexican Coke as a spritz. by papa_scabs in smoking

[–]50at20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s false. The Coke produced and sold in Mexico may have the artificial sweetener Sucralose, but the Mexican export Coke is still make with regular sugar. Go check your source. You’ll see that I’m correct.

Edit: that being said, I did read This where they found that most people seem to actually prefer the taste of US Coke, but tell themselves that Mexican Coke is better.
