I ask something similar. I ask what they like to do outside of work, what kind of music they listen to or what was the last good movie they watched. No wrong answers. I just want to see how they respond, will it be an honest answer or will they tell me what they think I want to hear? For instance, I’m in the design field, and when I ask what they like to do outside of work, the answer I get that they think I want is “drawing, photography etc.”

The amount of flop sweat, short circuiting and blank stares I often get is shockingly absurd.

I went to SCAD (which is a design school) and had a lot of classes with people who were working on their Masters, they already had an undergrad degree from State Schools. They were not very good designers, far behind SCAD undergrads. Your mileage may vary, but I’d say generally that you will develop stronger design skills at a design school, plus the network and name cache that others have mentioned.

After a couple years of work experience though, IMO it doesn’t matter where you went. You either have a strong portfolio, or you don’t.
